I really love pre-recorded 7 1/2 IPS Reel to Reel especially those made in the 1950's - 1960's most of which are recorded in real time before high speed duplication began. Like RCA Living Stereo, Bel Canto, Mercury Living Presence, Audio Fidelity. These older tapes are acetate tapes and can break easy however they are likely be some of the best sounding recordings you will ever own. Just never FF or rewind and you will be fine.In the late 1970's the companies switched to Polyester back-coated tapes and these can develop dreaded sticky-shed" syndrome and loss of lubricant, it is always a risk that any of these tapes can start squealing. I've only had two that squealed and there were bought off of eBay. One Barclay-Crocker and one London, both were Dolby encoded. Dolby encoding happened about the same time. If you never store you tapes in the basement and don’t live in a swamp you my be OK as I have never had a RTR develop squeaking after it got to my home.
At the risk of having you compete with me on eBay I would stick with the RTRs from the 1950's and 1960's and you will be set for some intense sonic thrills.
I’ve had excellent luck recording DVD-Audios to Reel to Reel.

Follow Ups:
I do play them on my deck, but the residue and muck seems to accumulate to the degree that I am cleaning more than playing. We are likely already competing on E bay, I buy a good deal of older R2R already.
I seem to have to clean my heads sometimes daily, especially the pinch roller from tape shedding on these old tapes. I would think that that should ease up after a couple of plays as some of these Reel to Reel tapes were not stored in the best conditions. I could check this out if I stop buying for a month or two, but that would be hard.Your idea of buying a second RTR is pretty good. My RTR has been the shop for almost three months and he keeps making promises and breaking them, at least he has torn the deck apart and knows it's a broken belt, but he hasn't even checked whither he has stock or not. I am starting to get impatient.
Check out what I just won on eBay: lots of Bel Canto’s, RCA Living Stereo's, London ffst (including two double plays with Ernest Ansermet), and even a few Westminster's, with UPS shipping it worked out $4.17 per tape total. And I can’t play them, counting these 37 I have over fifty RTRs I haven’t heard. They are all cleaned up with leaders added and ready to play. Oh well I hope he is telling the truth and I get my RTR back by the end of next week.
