How does Denon blank audio cassette's stack up against Maxell or TDK cassette's?
Follow Ups:
Frankly, I think they are better than both. Maxell and TDK were both very good tapes. But they had the edge in terms of marketing and availability. But quality wise, Denon's high end tapes will outperform either of the Max or TDK counterparts. Had Denon been more widely available and/or promoted, I believe they would have far surpassed either Max or TDK.
HI,Jon's comment makes a good point, although there was such a wide diversity of tapes that blanket views on whole brands, whose products spanned many decades is a tricky one to make. One has to identify specific models within the marque, so to speak. Denon made terrific tapes, I wouldn't take that away from them - the DX3 as an enhanced type 1 was simply excellent, the HD 6, 7 and 8 were splendid type IIs, the HD-M was a phenomenol metal; their super metal, the HG-X, I think it was - which I haven't used has won great respect of a fellow audiophile. Buy with confidence.
However, DENON tapes ( Type I to IV ) never received any good review at all in all the Audio Magazine cassette test reviews from the 80's to the 90's. I am pretty surprised at the test results. The tester from the magazine uses a Nak 582 as his reference deck though.
Keep in mind that Denon was not a producer of Audiotapes
Tdk, maxell etc... are Expert in making Audiotapes.Best quality you get from BASF (the inventor of magnetics reel tape
and from which the casette tapes came)
and from TDK which is belived to have some of the best quality tapes.i highly doubt Denon is better than Tdk,maxell or Basf.
I would compare Denon with Sony tapes
Hi John (in Spain)Denon (Nippon Columbia) and wholly owned subsidiary of Sanyo Corporation was indeed a full origination manaufacturer of magnetic tape, so I'm afraid you're not correct there.
To rank them with Sony is fine - Sony also plays second fiddle to no-one!! Neither does Fuji Magnetics.
You must remember that TDK (Tokyo Denki) and Maxell (Hitachi-Maxell/Makesura) ploughed much more into marketing expenditure than their competitors. They were top flight products too - but market acceptance is only partly about product quality.
I do however agree that BASF make excellent tape and cassettes.
Another thing to point out is that, like hardware manufacturers, media manufacturers had "goodies" and "disappointments" in their ranges over the years, and to paint an entire brand with a meritorious epithet of quality (or lack of it)is neither true nor fair.
Kind regards,
Marc
