Hi everybody,After seeing it on Vintage Knob,
http://www.thevintageknob.org/KENWO...060/KX2060.html
I fantasized how nice my KA-907 amp and KT-917 tuner would look together with their TOTL brother, a rare KX-2060 tape deck. Finally, an opportunity has risen to get one on German eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Kenwood-9-3-Kg-...1QQcmdZViewItemTranslation from German:
http://world.altavista.com/babelfis...1QQcmdZViewItemAnd I won!
It was quite a fight - 10 bids were placed in last 30 seconds. Now since it is so rare, I don't know how really good it is.
I couldn't find any real info on the web, except for the Vintage Knob excellent site. How does it compare to other top decks?
I would appreciate any additional info.
Does any inmate own one?
Some brochures, user manual, service manual?
It has a couple of features that I don't know how to use...
First is the calibrateable Double Dolby and the other is the variable fine-bias adjustment with built-in oscillator.
I don't have a manual,so any idea how these should be used would be great.
Thanks,
Aleksandar
Follow Ups:
Hi,I just recently sell this deck to a friend that collects Silver-gear. I received it in slightly bad condition, broken power switch, bad belts and so on.. So I did spend some time on it.
(On a pictures you posted also look like Power-switch knob is broken..? )
It has a very god audio circuitry, playback and recording sounds extremely well.
Bias and Rec-level settings are very simple to adjust; you should just adjust levels for both channels
to a center-red LED in a LED bar-graph.
Otherwise, mechanics on this deck is not so great, compared to other High-End Double-Capstan designs. It is a Single-motor, Single-Capstan, belt drive.
I did have some problems with speed stability, but with new belt and new capstan it works without
a problem.
It is for sure great piece, for me one of the nicest “ Silver-decks”…
Davorin,Thanks a lot for the fast answer!!!
Someone at last who had used this deck - I also tried on several other forums and got zero response.
I don't know yet if I'll have to replace the capstain roller.
Was it hard to find the replacement?
Where did you get it?Whn I searched for KX-2060 with Google, I stumbled upon your old ad and I realized that you are from Maribor!
I'm from Belgrade :-)Can you be more specific on using rec and bias calibration?
Maybe step by step instructions?
Is it used together with that 400Hz and 10kHz tone generator?
If not, what is it for?It also has this dolby switch with double function - what is this other "filter" for? What "double dolby system" inscription on the deck stands for?
Thanks again,
Hi,Well, about the settings.
• Put in some new, god quality tape
• Set TAPE and BIAS EQUALIZER switches to proper position (NORMAL/CROM/METAL)
• Set DOLBY NR to OFF
• Set MONITOR switch to TAPE position
• Press 400 Hz button
• Press REC and PLAY buttons, so the tape starts recording test signal. Now, set the MONITOR switch for a short back to SOURCE position, and observe FL-meters
and Led-graph displays, they will show like on picture I posted before.
For a proper recording adjustment, you should get the same readings with MONITOR on TAPE. To achieve that, just adjust REC-CAL and BIAS-ADJ knobs, they are each other dependent.
You can repeat this also with 10 kHZ oscillator, it will give you better adjustment on higher frequencies.
If you are not able to get the readings just right, than there is something wrong with tape or deck,
Like magnetized heads or similar.Double Dolby means that deck uses separate Dolby circuits for recording (Input) and Playback
(Output) amplifiers. Filter stands for standard MPX filter; you do not need to use it, unless you record from tuner.
Well, pinch roller on my deck was eccentric; I tried everything from brushing to polishing, still measured too much wow-flutter. Finally, I replaced it with the one I took from newer Technics / spare parts deck, fitted perfectly.Woow, a lot of typing in English. Funny for two guys from former YU…???
Evo i mog sajta :-) : http://www.kujucev.com
Puno pozdrava!

Congrats. It looks like a real keeper. It must have been one of the first decks on the market with metal tape capability as the "Vintage Knob" site says it was introduced in 79'.I am sure it will have good to very good fidelity. But for some reason it seems that the best decks were produced from 82' - 86' or so. I don't know why that is but it seems like they were making some killer decks during that period and then gave up and spent the R&D elsewhere.
Kuja, congrats on a great catch. who cares how it sounds when it looks like a million bucks and your rack will be gorgeous :-)Serioulsy, I have found so far that nothing can touch a good Nak.
The secret are Naks heads.Although I know this, I keep on buying other top decks for their beauty. Like B&O 9000 and Alpine for example. I want this one as well.
For me, cassette deck is a pinnacle of mechanical engineering. Every top deck has a soul, like sport car. And it is much cheaper and much easier to store :-)To perform optimally, any deck needs thorough cleaning.
-Use zippo fuel on an ordinary white cloth, rub the RCA connectors until all the dirt comes down and the cloth remains white. Put some contact cleaner afterwards.
-demagnetize heads. If you do not have head demagnetizer, look for DIY projects online, it is simple to make.
-use good interconnects. I was amazed how much information can be
-fight vibration. Use reversible tweaks in case you decide to sell it one day.
