Thanks for the tip, that was the problem...Now I just need to understand why it won't record (anything but rumble)... Great sound on tapes already recorded, though.

Turned out that the bias circuit croaked....
Did you fix it? New components or board?
I had to replace a part. It was a few years ago and I no longer have the machine or manual and I don't remember the part number. I do remember it took me several weeks to locate a replacement part. Also, check and clean all switches that may be in the record circuit..

Check for the bias freq on the record and erase head, should be about 100khz...
