I don't understand how such a well biult machine could be so unreliable.
Of course I keep hearing about the same two broken machines.
I was looking to buy my last deck not looking for something that will sit on a techs shelf most of the time.
I think I'll try to find an EMI BTR-2 instead.
Follow Ups:
Yep, they're mine. They "broke" when I powered them up after being untouched for 13 years.
Should have known better and used a variac to bring them up after such a long time.
Alhough one has less than 200 hours on it, the other may have 750.
They were flawless until I let them sit.
FWIW - I never heard anything touch them sonically.
And the craftsmanship is typically Swiss. Flat out stunning.
But I had them super-optimized for record/play at 30 IPS. Although they work fine at 7.5 ips, seems like it'd be a waste to use one as a playback-only machine at slow speeds (7.5/15)...
Gotta get around to getting them serviced some time.
'Course I've been saying that for about three years. :(
Best regards,
"And the craftsmanship is typically Swiss. Flat out stunning."On a somewhat related topic: On a trip to Switzerland many years ago (to study audio and acoustics), I flew on Swissair. There was a Swiss woman sitting next to me. We were scheduled to arrive at, I think, 7:30-something AM. The cool part is that we touched down exactly on time, and the woman turned to me and said "Swiss precision".
Yup, ya can't beat those Nagras, Stellavoxes, and Studers! :)
... was eating my soup, saw a fly and asked for a new soup... stewardess told me: "eat around it!"yep, those swiss scheisters are something.......................
the emi machine is super cool- makes me think of a British Studer C-37.What about parts availability and tape handling? Would be very neat in a musuem or collection though...
