How large is your cassette collection of new old stock?I am collecting since a few years allready! My collection has grown to about 500 tapes including about 300 brand new type IV tapes bought for about 1-3 USD each. Don't ask me. I will never sell them!
But I have to say that the time to start a collection is over.
Wether you are allready sitting on a collection or you just could forget the cassette format because no quality tape is available at a fair price and go staight to reel to reel because Quantegy and RMGI is offering brand new quality tape. This is my personal opinion and advice.
On the other side, you can get good results with standard tape like TDK SA or Maxell XL-II which is still available in shops. TYPE IV offer just a little fidelity more but it is a question if it is worth the price.
Follow Ups:
I also have some SA-X and Maxell XL-IIS, and even some TDK SA, which I keep for when people want me to make tapes of LPs for them. But you are correct...the price of Metal tape has really gone up over the last 2 years...with supply dwindling...sometimes I find good Metal NOS in dollar/discount stores for around a dollar each...but it's hit and miss...
When you think of how much time & effort to actually record over 300 blank tapes...I don't I will ever get to using them all!!
Hi Grant,I enjoyed your post and am impressed with your type IV collection. Tell us a bit about your collection of metals - what they consist of, what you've enjoyed working with and playing the most and which you believe have the best quality:price ratio. What are their vintages and how far does your life with metal go back? Any favourite recordings and what type of music do you listen to?
Best regards,
I have 40 or 50, mostly Maxell XL-IIS. I have my Nak setup for them & I like the sound. BUT I already have over 1000 records, 300 cds, 150 DVDs, so how much dead technology does one keep? lol!
Hi Estes,Your question, how much dead technology do you keep!! Well, if the new stuff is MP3 in various guises and Apple iPod, then it's easy - keep it all!! Specially when you have tape stock like that to marry to your Naks. Analogue rules!!
