it's been awhile since i've listened to my boxes and boxes of cassettes, mostly tdk SA, SA-X and maxell XL2 taped about 10 years ago on my then tape decks, Akai GX52 and before that Aiwa ADF770. (i had to sell my stereo system about 8 years ago when i did 2 years of constant travelling... sigh)
But having seen a few 'top-end' decks going for apparently good prices, i was wondering if anyone here's used or can recommend any of these decks? (i decided against nakamichi, as i keep hearing problems of vintage naks dying mechanically and being hard to get parts etc. And i used to own a 582 that was great but ended up with weird solenoids...).
So, are these good prices for 3head dual capstan models? are there other models i should also consider?
tia!
- Aiwa excelia XK009, about $230
- Aiwa AD f910, about $60
- Sony 555es, about $130

I've made a list of prices at which I could not resist to buy. I. E. In Ebay germany these prices would be a completely bargain. Of course, things may be quite different in other placesYou can check them here:
http://db.audioasylum.com/cgi/m.mpl?forum=tape&n=5267&highlight=rotovator+prices+which&session=from the decks you have Posted, I have an AD-F910. I really like this deck. I didn't hope much about it when I bought it. It was partially non-functional and severely miscalibrated. But after some hours cleaning and changing belts, and re-calibrating it I had to admit that this deck challenged other far more expensive decks Like my TEAC V-8030.
I suppose the other two will be better, but this one is good, and it is priced very well.
There are things I don't like about it. It is a two motor deck, the third motor is used to open and close the door. So don't get mislead about its 'three motor' words on it. Second, its bias frecuency is 85Khz, quite unusual (?). It's quite noisy when opening and closing door.
But there are many good things. It weights less than expected, has manual HX-PRO, It is pretty fast operating. And from the three listed is the most recent.
thanks for your quick reply - i checked out your list of prices... so those prices are all in euro?
thanks for pointing out that '3 motor' on the f910 doesn't really mean that! but it sounds like the f910 could be a bargain if it's under $100.
i like the look and the claimed technology of the xk009 though, but the one i'm looking at is selling for $260 - much higher than your listed 100euro... do you think it's still worth it? seems like a classic deck to me, and maybe will last longer than a f910 or any sony, naka, etc?
Hello.Yes prices are in euro. And these, however, are not rigurously studied and calculated, just my opinion from the auctions I follow. Remember:
these are the quantities that are a completely bargaing. I have listed
them to quickly check them in case I find an ending auction and need to react soon. For example it is normal for a XK-009 to reach 150 Eur (170 - 180 Dollars). The last I followed was sold at 126 Eur. I probably would have tried it if I hadn't bought on august two decks (my wife would kill me, then) In my list it appears as 100 Eur (if I remember ok). If its price wouldn't have gone above 100 I would have entered in the auction, no matter what my wife would have said (hope she doesn't read this).
You can not of course follow blindly the list, as you are in the US, where appreciation for some decks can be different, but you can compare ones to others.
There are many brands, and many models. Why just concentrate on three?
By the way, my wife is usually right on me, and this time is no exeption. It's me who has gone mad with this 'compact cassette decks' disease.
This is a very good price for the buyer but not for the seller - I would be very happy if I would have baught the Aiwa for this price.
which aiwa for which price do you mean? the excelia or the f910?
