Hi...I have a pretty nice Tandberg TCD310 MKII cassette machine that needs some help. And I'd like some advice from anyone with smarts about these units. Two problems, actually. The first is occasional tape-spill. It doesn't really EAT the tape. It just spills inside the transport and then, when the mechanism detects a variation in tension, it shuts off.
The Second problem is occasional variations in the output signal. Precluding the above problem, the tape will sound fine up to a certain point...and then the highs and mids will go south on me.
I know it's not the tape, because I'd done some simple tests, like trying old AND new tapes...and rewinding back to the trouble spot to see it it does it again...(sometimes it does, sometimes it plays fine..depending I suppose on how long I wait, etc.)
MY guess is that the pinch roller has lost it's gripocity and isn't pressing consistantly. I've already been thru the search for NOS roller. No luck. And I've also talked with SoundSmith - I can't affort a $250+ refurb at this time.
So I've ordered a bottle of that Caig RBR rubber reJuvenator fluid.
Anyone use this stuff? Someone suggested that it's better to remove the roller for the process....but I did a search here, on the cleaning topic, and everything I read seemed to be just wipe the stuff on while it's in the deck. Wouldn't removing the roller be more effective?Any comments, besides "Don't be such a cheap-skate, Louie, just send your deck in with a check!" ?? *heehee*
Follow Ups:
and live in San Bernardino county, east of LA. I heard of a good tech in LA area. Where do you live?
I live in Oregon, just south of Portland..
I thought I had sold it, then found it in the garage the other day. Long time ago, I packed it up and dragged it along, and my issue may just be simple or belt/pulley. This person in Van Nuys I believe was recommended by 2 or 3 people on AA and also the tech for a well known dealer and has a good rep. I also have an old R2R from Tandberg which needs help.
I see....well, I've got two TCD310MkII's and I've had both completely apart and back together, cleaning, replacing bulbs, repairing small stuff, and lubriplating...I'm starting to think maybe I'm the person I'm looking for ... *haw haw*...
Anyway....we'll see, once that Caig Rubber Restorer arrives....(hopefully today or tomorrow)
I will keep all who are innerested posted.
Thanks to awl who care about this kind of thing
My 9041X is probably the finest sounding source I had in the past, perhaps ahead of my Linn LP12/etc. but I never got R2R prerecorded tapes. I suspect belt, lube, mini fix and return to function, but all of these Tandbergs are notorious for being a bit fussy. Mine powers up, the reels move a bit together, then frozen. Belt is probably stretched and off the pulleys. No time, so little free space, with family, work, church, etc.
Hi.
You can also read this thread.

Hi !In fact, I read those threads....and alot more too...
I'll be doing good just to get the rollers out undamaged without loosing the teeny spacers and stuff.....
thanks
I feel your pain....I had a TCD340A that was a bear to get apart & work on. Nobody else wanted to touch it either. I finally did get it properly repaired after finding a Xerox copy of the service manual in an unpronouncable German hamlet & waiting 6 months for it. Then I sold the deck. Super-nice machine, though.
If you can get the pinch roller out, it would probably be better to do it that way, provided you are confident you can put it back together. I've got some rubber cleaner/rejuvenator stuff that has worked wonders for idlers & even fixed some belts, so it very possibly might take care of your problem.
When you use it, you'll want to clean it with a somewhat rough cloth. Keep rotating the cloth to a clean spot until the black crud stops coming off onto the cloth, or is at least to a minimum. Then you'll know you've got the nasty dry stuff on the outside cleaned off & it should be ok. When it's clean, the rubber should look uniformly dull. Let the roller dry thoroughly before playing a tape & try to avoid touching the flat surface with your fingers. OR wear latex gloves or clean your fingertips first with denatured alcohol to dry out the skin oil.
While you're in there, you might as well clean everything else.
Good advise....I like those ideas....
thank you.....I'll do that.
