Hi there.Lessee...
"Can I leave the tape on the machine for a day or so?"
Yep. I'd loosen one of the reels a bit so there's no tension on the tape, but as long as you're not a smoker or don't kick up superhuman quantities of dust, there's no harm in it.
"Any suggestions on how to avoid rewinding or fast forwarding all the way to the end of the reel? Do I need to get used to watching it until it gets close and then winding the rest of the way by hand?"
You can set the counter to "0000" at the beginning and stop it before it rewinds past that point. But really, the more you thread an open reel deck, the faster you'll get at it. The way I do it is to go directly from the supply reel to the takeup reel & spin it around a few times. Once the tape is around the takeup reel securely, loosen the tape at the supply-reel side & put it over the heads and between the capstan & pinch roller, and the motor-switch arm. In reality, it only takes me about 5 seconds. No biggie.

Thanks for your help. I think practice will help me.Do you store your reels "tails out"? It seems like in order to do that, I'll have to re-thread and wind the reels before putting them away.
Hi.If you have stuff you want to last a very long time with less chance of print-through, then tails out is a good idea. If it's just dubs of commercially available material, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
I have both heads-out & tails-out tapes that have been fine for many years.
The goal of storing tails-out is to minimize the tape tension during storage and ensure an even tape pack. Fast winding usually puts more tension on the tape. The tighter the tape pack, the higher the chance of print-through. If you play side two of your tapes through to the end (assuming you have a quarter track deck) it's the same effect as storing tails-out.
Bobbo,Thanks for all of your help. The Teac is an auto-reverse quarter track, so I think I'll be okay storing tapes either way.
Nice deck you have there. My 2300S is similar, but no auto-reverse. I'm playing Hendrix's "Axis: Bold As Love" on mine right now.
Thanks. I listened to Jimmy Smith, Got My Mojo Workin' last night. Unfortunately, I discovered that there's too much hiss/noise in the left channel. Not on the tape, but the machine. Oh well. When I go back East to visit friends and family, I'll have to bring the Teac and have it serviced in NJ.In the meantime, I figured out that the Sansui just needs its belt cleaned or replaced, so I'll take care of that and I'm back in business...
