Depends on the device. I wouldn't use a 6SN7 in the megahertz range!

donīt know to be honest, but a friend thought he was on to something regarding the differences in sound from the two devices.also between digital and analogue.
thxs anyway

leif,The difference in sound between the two has to do with the attendant circuitry, voltages, output transformer vs OTL, etc. Nothing to do with rise-time, at least not in the audio band.
It amazes me that people are still trying to justify using tubes, and with obscure, ether-like technical arguments.
It's ok to simply say "I like the sound of output transformers!".
OK! I like the sound of my Hoerning Toroid 300B oildamped OPTs.No doubt about it! the Q.was raised by a SS friend.Iīm also very excited about the sound of my nearly finished "quattropowered" 36 chokes worth of EF 810F S&B LCR Riaa project.(Soon to replace my NOS-tubed Aesthetix Io)

It's OK to like tubes better than solid state. In some ways they do better than solid state, and it is NOT just added distortion, either.
Serious circuit designers respect the work of others, and try to learn how to make the best sound possible. Over the years, tubes have gotten closer to some of the advantages of SS, and the reverse is true. No amp is completely ideal, no matter what the ad copy says.
