Greetings from hot and muggy Texas,I had a request... or at least a suggestion.
There seems to be a current trend of Budget, 'bang for your buck' posts in the vintage area. Why they picked vintage for these posts I have no idea... since vintage audio has been nothing but a money pit for most of us.
I was wondering if possibly a 'Golden Age' type vintage forum could be started... leaving the vintage forum to be turned into a 'Budget' or 'Early Solid State' forum... since it seems that there are a lot of the budget and 80s SS receiver fans out there that are using the vintage area as a posting ground. Sifting through the rubble to find actual 'vintage' audio posts is getting increasingly more difficult.
Thanks for your consideration!

Yeah, then later we can subdivide the Golden Age forum into those that only listen to vintage sources vs. those that might plug a CD player in now and then...........
Nah,Vintage hasn't meant a bottomnless money pit for me. I am certain I would have been unable to pursue good audio had I not gone tube vintage and modified.
And I don't mind having a separate tube asylum either, after all my LP's are as valuable to me as my CD's are, and I also need the Vinyl group anyway.
There is a Tube Forum already, where all of the SS electronics is out of bounds. Banning has defined his 'Golden Age' as ending in 1951, so I don't understand the issue - there is a forum for his 'Golden Age' already. How much I did, or didn't pay, doesn't change whether what I acquired is or isn't a piece of 'Vintage Gear'. I don't understand the problem (obviously) with congratulating others' windfalls when they happen, or celebrating the fact that much of yesteryear's quality equipment can be had for a pittance, AS WELL AS discussing the relative quality and sound of various SS equipment in the Vintage Gear forum.
Frankly, I don't find it so hard to not read what sounds uninteresting, and focus on what I think does - all in ONE forum on older, quality hi-fi equipment. I rarely see stuff on 80s BPOC receivers in 'Vintage Gear', but do agree that there is plenty about 70s and 60s equipment. For me, and apparently many others, this can be considered vintage, and from a 'Golden Age' in and of itself.
Finally, I enjoy the variety of subjects from 'Look what I found for $5!' to 'Where can I find specs on AR-1s?' or 'What is the best sounding Marantz amp ever?'. Having a mixed group gives me the option - every time I visit - to exercise my choice to read only about subjects I care about, or to expand my horizons and have my beliefs challenged.
We have enough isolation and segregation in life as it is. The web gives us the chance to break down barriers to communication and provides for the exchange of views and ideas in a safe environment.
Leave Vintage Gear as is.
Cheers,
I _like_ solid state from the 70s. I like big honking rock 'n roll receivers. I like getting them cheap. As far as I'm concerned, the cult of the tube can shove it. But that does not detract from the wisdom of monkeypunch's idea. It really doesn't make sense to have one forum hosting posts regarding 1970s SS and 1960s tubes. In the interest of harmony, perhaps the term "vintage" should be abandoned and two forums created with more accurate descriptions of their contents. I know Audiokarma specifically has a forum named Vintage Solid State.
Agreed 110%Golden age could be all about early tube gear from all the great companies like Fisher, Scott, Eico, Mac, Marantz, Tannoy, Quad, Leak, etc.
There is a real need for a focused vintage tube forum as you may know many Yahoo groups have popped up to fill this need.
I am sure when you added the vintage forum this is what was intended.
We could leave the Vintage forum as is which is all about 1970's and 80's ss receivers and rack system speakers found in the garbage. Maybe rename the Vintage forum as Vintage Cheapskates.
Please!
