There are two different ways to do your example. One is to use the 'Slow Message/Topic Search'or 'Exact Match' dialogue which looks for that exact phase. The second better way is to use the advanced search syntax found on the help page. To find both words, enter 'bop +city' in the search box. The plus sign forces the seach to include only items with that word.

First, you should use radio buttons correctly, by placing them on the _left_ side of options. I don't think I've seen many forms on the web laid out like yours with the buttons to the right. Very confusing. Why not put a Search Help link on the search page itself?
You need to explain the Slow Message/Topic Search some place. I still don't understand what it is, and it's not explained on the search help page. When you use it, btw, your highlighter doesn't work - it highlights individual words within the phrase.
You should get rid of the hyphens in the select list of forums. Most forums are selectable using the first letter of the forum name, except for the ones preceded by hyphens. For example, to select "All Forums", you generally just hit the "a" key twice.
Thanks for the suggestions. I made some changes and added the help link. I'd forgotten that it wasn't on the initial page.Changing the highlight routine for phrases is difficult. Search search terms get split up automatically by the routine, so it'd be a complete rewrite of the routine.
Isn't there any way to retain MySQL's native phrase search capability, allowing phrases to be entered in double quotes?Or is there a reason you're rewriting the search terms to not permit searching for phrases?
I'm using the fulltext search which uses a different syntax. I'm not sure how quotes are used there and had some issues with quotes causing problems in the past. The exact match uses a like %search phrase% and does the same thing albeit a bit slower.
Thanks, Rod. I tried it but it combined the words - bop+city became bopcity in the results. More help? :-) Tom
You need to add a space before the + sign: bop +city
