In Reply to: what do you guys think of silverline audio speakers? posted by hondadanda on July 24, 2002 at 11:23:01:
I have never heard them, but there seem to be an awful lot for sale on audiogon for such a small company.
They dont seem to be selling used either.
I had some speakers for sale and a guy offered to trade me his sonatas for my speakers.
He had been trying to sell them for months.
In all fairness to Silverlining Audio, he had the weird wood ones.
Just my two cents worth.
I have never heard GR Audio speakers, but there does seem to be considerable intrest here in them.
They have a web site, and the line array looked pretty cool.
There was a GR for sale on Audiogon, and it sold immediately !
I ALWAYS think of resale value, ALWAYS.
I quit engaging in mental masterbation years ago.
I know whatever I buy will not stay here forever, and I always think about its resaleability.
Perhaps consider the VMPS 626 Ribbon Monitor, several people I know , and one, JONBEE, had Revel M 20's.
Ever hear M 20's ???
They sound nice, and he lokes the VMPS better.
Perhaps you should add those to your list ???
Follow Ups:
It's true that there are a lot of Silverlines for sale on Audiogon, and this probably stems from several factors. First, Silverline seems to have sold a lot of speakers, especially the Sonatinas and Sonatas. Because there are a lot of them out there, there are also a lot for sale. Second, thanks to legal action threatened by a rival speaker company, Silverline changed the design on these two models. This caused a number of people to trade in or sell their old models, and also drove down prices. Third, a significant percentage of Silverline for sale ads on Audiogon appear to be for review samples and perhaps demo speakers from audio shows. I don't recall this being the case for other makers, although I must admit that I haven't really investigated it.Finally, it is also worth pointing out that we audioholics are notoriously fickle, and that the popularity of makers and models waxes and wanes. If it is true that some Silverlines aren't selling quickly on Audiogon, it is also true that some sell almost immediately, and that some models are inevitably more popular than others. These are obviously not difficult points, but they should be kept in mind when considering the market for used speakers.
Excellent post, and I hope no offense was taken when I call em Silver Lining speakers !
I call Vandespleens, too.
I fairly pointed out that I have never heard them, too.
But I know a dump when I see it, and perhaps this explains what was happening ??
I respect cut throat audio wise, and he loves the 17's !
Fishing wise, well he's never hooked a Tarpon on a fly rod !
I have never met the folks at Silverline, and have nothing against them, and I do try and keep an open mind, and several people have come out with support for Silver line, people who I respect.
I have never heard their speakers, perhaps one day I will.
Chris
And what makes you think that I have never hooked a Tarpon on a Fly Rod? - Careful ! - Careful !
Cut-Throat
WOW WOW WOW I stand corrected, big time!
What a picture!
Wow! That a monsta' fish!! Which one in the pic are you?BTW, you indicated that SR-17 is extremely detailed, is the presentation in your face or on the plane of the speakers? How do they deal with less than ideal recordings? (Unfortunately I have a ton of these, being a fan of that era)
In my experience, I have seen three categories of speakers in handling this:
1. Speakers which are just unlistenable with less than ideal recordings.
2. Speakers which point out the flaws in the recording but do so in such a manner that does not stop from enjoying the music.
3. Speakers that gloss over the imperfections and smooth it out, but then do not sound quite open and clear on the good recordings either.
1 and 3 are not absolutely not desired. 2 is the one I am looking for. My current speakers (PSB Stratus Minis) lie somewhere between 2 and 3.
1st of all, i never heard the sr17's, so everyone yump on me now! ;~) ok, that's outta the way... a relative, who's ears i trust, drove three hours to hear the sr17's. he liked 'em a lot. but, he preferred the proac 1sc's. said they were more detailed & threw a more holographic soundstage. thought the sr17's mite be a bit more forgiving, but he has never been off-put by the proac's being too analytical. he sold his 1.5's to get the 1sc's for his second system. in his 1st system, he uses the proac 2.5's... i have yet to hear the 1sc's, but the 1.5's & the 2.5's are great... i was buggin' him for 2 years to of-load the 1.5's for something like the sr-17's or the 1sc's, & he thought i was nuts. well, when he finally went to audition, he said i was right, but it was the 1sc's that did it, not the sr-17's.all that rambling aside, if it were *me*, i'd try the vmps 626 neo ribbons, w/either the auricaps or trt caps upgrade... ;~)
ymmv,
Well - I have heard both the Proac 1sc and the Silverline SR-17. I picked the Silverline SR-17 - It was no contest!.To each his own and YMMV indeed!
Cut-Throat
*exactly*!!! after some level of quality, it comes down to personal taste - that's why ya gotta try for yourself...
I'm the one holding the Fly Rod with the Minnesota Sweatshirt on.The SR-17's are not what I would call "In your Face" Speakers. I would call them accurate speakers and would choose your following description.
2. Speakers which point out the flaws in the recording but do so in such a manner that does not stop from enjoying the music.
---- Why don't you call the dealer and make sure that they have a pair of SR-17's for you to listen to. I would be interested in your thoughts after you hear them.
Cut-Throat
thanks for the tip. The dealer carries all the line, its just that it is too far away in another state. Maybe I will muster uo enough energy and get on the road. This is problem of living in the boonies.
your reasoning is humorous. care to elaborate what mental masturbation is?
I would love to elaborate!]
I used to lie to myself, say to myself that THIS speaker was the Last one, this one was going to do it, to be the one!
Then I would be 'Done with it' HA HA
THATS Mental Masterbation, Lyin to yourself.
I dont lie to myself anymore, at least about speakers.
I admit I am not going to keep any speaker forever, and I think of resale value, and ease of selling it.
I got jumped on for passing along the opinion of someone I respect to you, did you see that post??
Chris
I see. So you're recommending that the guy add to his list several speakers you've never heard because some other poster liked them. You also comment on the Silverlines that you never heard because you saw some for sale on Audiogon.Your brilliance is staggering. What use have we for actual listening experience when we can get all the info we need from luminaries such as yourself? I bow before your feet.
nt
Listen smart ass, I respect Jonbee, and several others opinions, and I am sharing those opinions and my own with him.
I bought the VMPS RM 40's based on others opinions of the speaker, people I resp[ect.
I put my money where my mouth is.
VMPS has a money back policy if you dont like them, so I took a chance.
I am still waiting for mine.
Excuse the f out of me for recommending he at least listen to the VMPS 626's.
In the 25 plus years I have been at this, I have seen hundreds of Silver Linings come and go, leaving customers unable to sell their products.
I am NOT coming down on Silverline audio, just being realistic, and commenting on what I see on Audiogon, and the desperate guy trying to off his weird wood Silver Linings.
I play Stocks, and I watch if everyone is dumping, and why.
If I saw a stock being dumped, or if I have inside info , you bet your ass I am going to call my friends and warn them.
I have learned over the many years I have been in this hobby, to value the opinions of others, and to pass on these opinions to others.
I really think all of us is smarter than one of us.
So what you are saying is the opinions of people on this board are worthless?
Than why dont you get your trolling ass out of here.
you can now learn how to take it.
L.O.L ! Well stated HAL !
But sometimes you do take other people reccommedations when an audition is impossible. I made the leap of faith an ordered RM40`s unheard, based on what people of this board said about em.
