Anyone know of any good mods for these speakers? One of my A-25's has a blown woofer and needs replacing. I know I can use the Seas 25 F-EW. Guess I'll get a pair, but what about crossover changes? Speaker Builder had an article on mods in 1990. Anyone have it?What about DQ-10's? Any ideas on improving these would be most welcome.
Follow Ups:
I built a replica of the A-25 with Seas 25f-EW (?) and the Morel MDT-20 tweeter. The original crossover was a simple topology with a cap in series with an attenuator on the tweeter and parallel on the woofer. With the new drivers, which are exact replacement for the originals, I had the system optimized with a LEAP program. The sound was 1000% cleaner than the original. If you want the schematic please email me and I can email it to you.
Charles
PS I also made a 3 way version of this speaker that I like better. The two way has a cleaner sound but the 3 way has a killer mid.
I have a bunch of mod ideas for the DQ-10s!
They are my main speakers and sound incredible (see my inmate system).
Email directly for some info on the mods and stuff.
Cheers
Dman
Unless you are doing it for the learning experience and or the love of these old classics, Why ?
I wouldnt waste my time, there are much better speakers available today.
When you think about your time, and cost, then what do ya got?
Its like my building his 4500 lb station wagons engine for high performance.
So what if it makes 350 horses, its still in a station wagon !
The above is for the Dynacos.
As for the dollies DQ 10, get rid of that god awful piezoelectric Squawker, soupertweater, or whatever you want to call it.
I recall someone using the raven ribbons, or was it the decca's ribbons on it.
Man, those Dollies are getting old !
I remember spending many nights in front of them smoking wacky tobacky and trippin out on the blue glow of the tubes and watching the snow fall on a cold Michigan night.
I know Bob Carver, and he and Jon Dahlquist were friends, close friends.
A Phase Linear 400 will light up the Dahlquists, and they were voiced by Jon for this amp.
SO, if I were you, I would simply replace all the caps, resolder all the connections, and I mean ALL the connections, and find me a used Phase 400, replace its caps too, especially its power supply caps, and go from there.
I used this combo for years, BUT, I used an Audible Illusions Tube Pre amp the Dual Mono one.
The Dahllies really come to life with a 400.
Perhaps post this questions on Vintage asylum.
You may get some action there as well ?
Good Luck
Chris
Yep, doing it for the experience and to see how much better I can get them to sound. Any specific driver recommendations on the DQ-10's?
I just enjoyed them as is, only replaced caps, and resoldered EVERYTHING, that made a huge difference, what amp you using???
I have 2 Carver TFM-15's, a Hafler DH-500, Adcom GFA555-II, HK PA-2100 and a Jolida JD-1501. Which do you think will sound best with the DQ's? I would try each at a time, but it's a real bear because the entertainment center I got to satisfy significant other weighs in at about 800 lbs loaded and the reconnects are tough.
And my other speakers are Genesis III's, Large Advents, Fried Beta IV's, Klipsch KG 5.2's and B&W DM1800's. Would any of them sound best teamed up with any particular amp?
I dont know about all those speakers!
Bob Carver told me that he and Jon Dahlquist are friends, and I do know about the Phase 400 and the Dahlquists, that was a very cmmon combo in its day, and I was around in its day.
Perhaps some of the other knowledgeable people here could recommend something, or have some experience with them.
Good Luck Kyle, and I see there is a person answering your post that can help you mod them too!
Happy soldering
Chris!
To tell you the truth, none of em!
The adcom and haflers imaging stink, the carver is too mushy, and jolida lacks the power.
Of all of them, perhaps the hafler, but the hafler has a glaze to it.
IF you want to keep em, find you a 400 phase linear, and sit back and smile.
The combo is magic, kinda like old klipsch and old MacIntosh tube amps.
Remember, Carver and Jon Boy Dahlquist were friends, the 400 was the voicing amp, why fool around?
