In Reply to: Nah, just a custom version of the Vifa XT posted by Edp on January 10, 2002 at 14:49:45:
Yeah the phase plug shape is a bit different than the Scanspeak unit but hey since its a customised unit, who knows until one opens up a Cremona. The esotar tweeters on the Guarneri and Minima Amator hardly looked like the typical Esotar tweeter anyway. But right, the timeline of the design (pre 2001) makes it a higher probability that it is indeed a customised Vifa XT than a Scanspeak D2904/700000. (but TACT did come up with a speaker that has that tweeter, right down to the aluminum tweeter baffle) What do you think of either tweeters btw, if you've had your paws on em?Also, the midwoofer/woofers doesnt appear to be the 8530/8545 no?
Follow Ups:
Actually the Vifa Xt and the Scan Super Revelator were shown for the first time at exactly the same time CES2000! They actually have been around for the same amount of time. Not a scan speak as it only has 3 holes holding the faceplate to the mag assembly. Also the subtile difference in the outer diameter of the dome relief indicates a non-scan speak. The midbass I can not make out. It will be custom and most likely a Scan 18w8531 variant, but not certain.
Hmmm, the standard Vifa XT pictured in the Vifa/Scanspeak website has the same mounting holes as the Scanspeak (meaning more than the Cremona tweeter), so if that will be the basis, the SF version is neither of the two hehehe. Btw, if the Scanspeak Super Revelator (they seem to have dropped that monicker ... even for the 8530) has been around that long, how come it hasnt been used by any major speaker manufacturer at all - difficult to work with perhaps? And it only appeared on the Scanspeak website within the last few months. You think its the 8531? I dont seem to see the sliced paper cone look on the pix, nor do the cones appear to have that crumpled carbon doped look either. Plus the dustcaps doesnt seem to be inverted ... maybe the've gone back to using Scanning drivers?
Scan Speak version appearance delay is, my guess, two reasons. Let Vifa name be the first to be associated to the ring to hash out bugs and judge acceptance. Scan Speak has much to loose with a dud using the name Revelator (even any named follow up to that tweeter).Technically the initial versions of the Scan were more expensive with Alinco and more technically designed rear chamber. Shooting for higher efficiency, but kinda odd in that most mid/bass units it would be mated with are 6 db lower, so attenuation needed which defeats much of the reason to go higher efficiency. Resistor sound becomes a more dominate factor that just raw driver performance.
Three screw on faceplate to mag/radiator combo IS shared between the XT and the Scan (I was wrong on that point). Proto's I saw years ago, was not so.
As to the rest of the new Sf model, I can not see in any photo really what they are based on, but it seems more and more Sf highly customizes the units they get. I did not go to the main convention hall where many of the big name static displays hang out. Too much HT , Car audio blasto and cell phone crapola.
Just came back from auditioning the Cremona from the dealer's. Still needs a lot of breaking in. As always, the midrange was real smooth. No complaints about the highs but the bass seems poorly integrated. Pnly time will tell. It costs about S$13000 here in Singapore. The new Plinus SA102 (100watt) wasn't enough to drive the Cremona's bass (rated 4ohm, 90db). Finally changed the amp to Pass Labs X250, much much better in the bass.
