I'd appreciate recommendations. Thanks in advance. Any thoughts on JBL 4410A's or 4412A's?
Follow Ups:
Great sounding speaker. Smooth and sweet. Works great with tubes or warm sounding SS amps. Check them out at www.solspeak.com. Also check out the Spendor 3/5. Great speakers for the money.
I just heard JM Lab Electra 906'es--the new ones--and was quite floored for the price--or any price for that matter. Fine speaker. Also, I highly recommend a pair of Spendor SP2/3's--Fantastic $1900/pair speaker, highly rated--and Jeffssoundvalues.com (great outfit) was recently advertising a pair of slightly used ones for $795. Stupidly good speaker for the money.
I would consider the B&W CDM1SE or CDM1NT series. I have a pair of CDM1SE and really enjoy them. They are a speaker that does well with most types of music, IMHO.
I'll list a few good speakers that I can think of....Vienna Acoustics Hadyn
Sonus Faber Concertino
Coincident Triumph
Meadowlark Vireo
Dynaudio Audience 50
JM Reynaud Twin MKII or Arpeggione
Silverline SR-12
ACI Sapphire III (used or Demo)Plenty of monitors in your price range. Just need to narrow it down to the ones that fit your personal tastes...
Man-O-man, 4412s.....I've been using a pair hooked up to my synthesizer as well as my tv for the last 14 years. They're kinda like an old pair of shoes that have always felt comfortable. My old Toshiba tv put out almost 10 watts per channel and could drive the JBLs to impressively loud volume except that it would occasionally clip on loud bass, at which point I'd turn things down. I've recently given them to my brother who also has a pair of the old L100s. Great speakers if ya like the JBL sound.
Check out Paradigm Studio Reference 20's or 40's. I've got the 20's and love them. Long break-in but the low end will blow you away for such a small speaker. Mids and highs are very detailed and musical, as you would expect. With stands (essential), they are actually under your budget. Many posts on this forum, and also at Audioreview.com on these Paradigm models.Do yourself a favor and give them a listen before you buy anything else.
Good luck,
RickMac
helloi also own a pair of paradigm studio 20 but i'm thinking about
getting some other pair of speakers cuz they don't sound quite right...
the highes are a bit coarse and bright to my taste...
but then i've had them for about 4 months now and they haven't been heavily used...
should i give it some more time?
by the way i use rega electronics to drive them if that matters...
Yea..you might want to consider selling the 20's. And if you do and they are black version 2's, I will be able to help you with the often difficult task of getting rid of them.Keep me in mind.
Thanks,
Ed
I had Active 20's for a bit. They were well broken in, but the highs were never fully satisfactory a bit dry and unnatural, and they had come midrange coloration and congestion. Also, the highs and mids never sounded integrated. Give the GR Paradox 1 a try. They have a similar signature to the 20's but it is very well integrated, with better detail and dynamics to boot.
Hi,
I wouldn't give up on them yet. When I bought them, the dealer warned me that they could take about 100 hours to break in and warm up and this goes along with other reviews of these. I also noticed that they were on the bright side for awhile. My analog/turntable was especially hissy on the "s" sounds in vocals. This has changed for the better and they sound great. I also purchased them in September, but they have been played almost every day.If they don't smooth out for you, it could just be that they aren't a very good match for your other gear. You should be able to sell them pretty easily considering how well reviewed they are.
