In Reply to: Obviously, somewhere slightly below its midwoofer. (nt) posted by Hyperion on September 25, 2001 at 07:11:58:
Since the Guarneri has rather VERY TALL stands, how far *below* the midwoofer is ideal listening axis given the ideal speaker-to-listener distance... I'm actually wondering if slightly higher-than-normal listening seat is preferrable to the common low soft couch. When I auditioned them in the showroom here, the seat was a rather high sofa. Would the angle of tweeters to the ear matter so much with the Guarneri, so as not to mess up treble response?I should have mentioned that I was talking about somewhere below the midwoofer, coz taken by itself my question really sounded silly even to me. That dreaded *nt* thing, I should try to avoid it.

Walter is correct. There is no absolute best listening axis. As long as you are somewhere on the midwoofer's axes or well below it then it should be fine. (Note: when the Guarneri are setup on smaller rooms, they tend to sound better on short rigid stands though.) It all depends on your distance from the speakers and since the stands are tall, they tend to sound better when there is at least 8' or 2.5m distance from the speakers to your listening position. At such distance the listening axis is actually not as relevant as it would be when listening to them at 6' away.I have a slight disagreement with Walter though. Although the Guarneri sounds involving off-axis, it is a sweet spot speaker: everything is more coherent and more life-like at the sweet spot where the speakers are fully toed in (you dont see anything except the face of the speakers).
You are right Hyperion, the Guarneri is a absolutely a sweet spot speaker, but I meant that the exact listening axes (ie ears-woofer)will not be decisive to determine whether this speaker is great or not. The right listening position: distance from speaker, toe in etc. is much more decisive, I agree.Sorry for the misunderstanding. Walter
Hello Arnel,It was not a real stupid question, but again it depends on how much away from the speakers you want to listen to it. The Guarneri's tend to be better when they have some room to breath. This does not only mean well away from the side and back wall, but also the distance between speaker and listening postion. Let state this way, they are ideal when you treat them as 'much' larger speakers.
Because I don't have an ideal room (who does), and I don't want to have to much room influence I have choosen to listen from it at a 2,50 meter distance. The Guarneri's are positioned almost 2,5 apart and more than 1 meter from the back wall. In this case I have to use a chair/couch that is just a little bit higher than normal to get your ears at the mids of the woofer. Almost as far as between woofer and tweeter. I amazing what a cushion can do. By the way, my listening postion is also determined by room and living restrictions. So again, not at all ideal.
In this way I get a relative direct sound I like. But be aware I use the Guarneri with a 300B amp and WE 300B tubes, which tend to be nice for the treble. Others would say rolled off.
Experiment a bit, the differences are very clear, but the Guarneri is very inolving even when you don't listen at the exact right axes. Of course this works in my room, with my amp etc.etc. Your mileage will vary. Hope this helps. At least I didn't 'nt' you. Good luck and enjoy. Walter
