It helped a Velodyne FSR-12. Use Remington Power Hammer threaded studs, pn 100760. They have a 1/4"-20 threads, and 1" shanks, so you can simply install threaded inserts. Total cost <$10 for 8. (I bought a large package of these spikes and can spare some - email me.)My current REL subs sound better without spikes, and REL recommends against their use. Of course, YMMV.
Use decoupling devices like vibrapods or other soft feet. The results are dependent on the floor and how high SPL you put out. Generally you don't want to transmit vibrations into the floor (by using spikes) since this could add audible distortion by setting floor and other objects in the room into motion. Coupling by spikes would increase this possibility. Decoupling feet should have a resonance f far below than of the lowest output freqeuncy of the speaker ( <5-10 Hz).Thomas
Spiking and weighting should definitely help, especially if your subwoofer is currently jusy sitting directly on carpet (as my Velodyne FSR-12 was). You will probably also have the perception of decreased bass because of the increased control, but as long as there is a level control for the sub, you can readjust the tonal balance to your liking.
I use 4 large Michell Tenderfeet under my Sunfire True Sub MkII. They definitly help. They're more cones than spikes, about 1.25" tall & 1" at their base. One other thing that helps the Sunfire is piling weight on top of it, at least 20 pounds.
I have heard that spiking subs robs them of some of the bass. If you decide to do it, ask your dealer for return privileges if they don't work.
Heres another question roughly along the same lines. I recently saw a subwoofer speaker stand. Thats right, a SPEAKER STAND for subwoofers. I assume it would only work with front firing subs, and not the down firing variety. Does anyone have any experirence with these sub speaker stands? Do they work?A third question: What experience has anyone had in using granite slabs under their subs? What size slabs were used and what were their effects?
I use a 17mm granite slab under my REL Strata III. The slab is about the same size as my Strata III. My room has a hardwood (suspended) floor, with padded carpet.I tried spikes, no spikes & the slab. Using the slab gives me the tightest bass with the best low end extension.
