For those of you who are familiar with Dahlquist DQ-10 loudspeakers, and are not faint of heart, I have just aquirred an extra pair of the 5" midrange drivers. I am toying with the idea of 'creating' a rear/surround DQ-10 for use in my music system. the idea came to me based on the old Dynaco/Hafler matrix theory. i have an extra power amp with about 50W/pc @4 ohms. I was thinking of the open baffle concept with a tweeter midrange, and woofer. Of course here lies the problem.Does anyone have recommendation for a tweeter, not only for the new speakers, but for the DQ-10s? I still have the stock ones in the DQ-10s, but I have heard of some people replacing them. A poster many moons ago (by the moniker of 'glapazz', I think, its in the search engine, but no Email address) recommended a Scan speak model. These would most likely have to be crossed over lower than usual, due to the stock midrange crossover schematic's crossover point, or possibly raising the midrange drivers LP cutoff, by redesigning the crossover.
What about woofers for the surround speaker? Nothing big, as they won't have to do much below 60hz (sub is taking care of the bottom end).
I also assume that I would need to experiment GREATLY with the crossover design. I have the orginal DQ-10 schematics, and I thought of making the crossover points the same for each end of the midrange driver and then getting the rest 'voiced' in.Any takers on the above idea? By that I mean anyone caring to share their thoughts, good or bad... I know this is a SERIOUS undertaking, to say the least, but if it could be done, I can only imagine the sound!!!
TIA!!!

Hi DMan,I used 2 pairs of 10's (front channel w/DQ 1W & DQLP1 subs; rear = a pair of unmodified 10's) for years. The sound was rather amazing. I eventually used the Yamaha D1000 (think the number is right, that's the dolby delay with 20 or so different venues, ability to change reflection times, delay times, high and low freq xovers). Wow, I hadn't thought about that set up in a while - it was pretty amazing. Movies like twister did everything I needed (even without prologic ss), but it enhanced music too. You had a multi feature remote that would alow you to change any of the SS parameters from your chair. I think you'll find that the SS speakers will be loud enough to just provide the ambience - I got away with a 150 watt accuras amp for the SS channel.
Back to your question - I'm not sure you are going to really succeed without the midrange driver - that is super critical to the 10's sound. You might be better off looking for a pair of used 10's. I got a pair for $200 once. Dave I'm afraid you are going to get into a tradeoff situation here. It's pretty easy to seperate the Mid/tweeter & woofer/midwoofer circuits from each other (actually improves the sound), but you are asking about deceasing size (of the ss speaker, an assumption on my part), changing drivers ect.. You're really designing a homebrew speaker, not a 10. I think you need to find a used pair of 10's, use/remount everything but the woofer and tweak that. (no, I haven't forgotten about the baffles I promised you!)
You really should search high and low for a DQLP1 crossover. I think I remember that you have a sub already. That will be such an improvement.

TAS ran an article about dq10s all around (4ch) by jwc i believe with identical amps as well. i think they used the tate sq decoder. the results were exemplary as well they should have been.
there was a mod by someone using ribbon tweets that was quite good, i had a pair in the house driven by a hafler 500. VG and the bass produced by these speakers using the hafler was unprecendented in my dahlquist experiences. bass from my fried RIIs was also unprecedented! structural damage could have ocurred to my house. and neither of these speakers are known for deep bass. btw, i dont remember if the ribbon replaced the piezo or the dome tweet.

Dman,
To answer your question about the tweeters,(Scanspeak 2010),
I did not alter the xover in any way. However a 12 ohm resistor was
wired in parallel with the tweet to match the system impedance.
We also deleted the piezo tweet and its associated xover components.
My friend did a freq. sniff with his analyzer to check our work.
The response is quite flat from 400 Hz to 18KHz(+/-1.5 dB).
The new tweets sound wonderful, sweet but very smooth and detailed with good extension.
Hope this helps,Regards,

Wish I could help, I too remember many a fine hour with the mighty DQ10s back in the day. Certainly one of the best speakers available along with the Quads, Beveridges etc. of the time. I have no idea how to rebuild one. I'd suggest checking the various DIY forums. I'm sure there are lots of ideas and ways to do it. HAve fun!
