Finally, after two months, my Quattros are in and will arrive to take up residence in their new home on Thursday. Not so sadly, my Thiel 2.4s will leave for greener pastures, and someone who likes their sound better. I will miss their look though. The Quattros with the black sock are not very attractive. Then, i'm not looking for what looks good, just what sounds good. Luckily don't have to worry about WAF, as she doesn't come into my listening room.Did say YIPPEE!

Will (4/30/07): Hello Richard, I have brought this question up to you on the phone, but thought the FAQ could benefit from it being addressed. Amplifiers are all different, and the truth is in the listening, but with that said, shouldn't OTL amplifiers offer a clearer sonic picture with a stable impedance, well designed speaker such as the 5A? Do you have any comments on OTL amplifers from your own experimentation?
Answer: HELLO WILL, IT IS TRUE. IF THERE EVER WAS A SPEAKER DESIGNED TO BE USED WITH OTL AMPLIFIERS, THE 5, 5A AND QUATRO ARE IT. THIS WAS PLANED FROM THE VERY BEGINNING ONLY TO DISCOVER THAT ALL AMPLIFIERS SOUND BETTER INTO A REASONABLY FLAT IMPEDANCE WHEN HIGH PASSED. I HAVE HEARD THEM SOUND INCREDIBLY GOOD WITH SEVERAL DIFFERENT ONES. AS USUAL DO THE AUDITION AND FIND THE ONE YOU LIKE.
I find this the last thing I care about for a speaker but those Vandy's look awesome. Congrats. I will get there some day. Model 5'sCustom morel towers ease the pain for now :-D

Shouldn't you share your happiness with those who love you, by playing their CDs occasionally?
The Quatro's were one of the most enjoyable speakers to listen to at RMAF (IMHO) Maybe I can find some used ones in a couple years, the 3a sigs are OK for now I guess....Congrats!

Congratulations, I'm a Vanderfan myself. Just curious, what other speakers if any, in that price range have you considered?
I considered a number of speakers, even plunked down deposit money on a couple before deciding on the Vandersteens. I considered:Vienna Acoustics Beethoven Concert Grands
Sonus Faber Grand Piano Domus
Audio Physic ScorpioI chose the Vandys for two reasons: they sound incredible; and the ability to tune the speaker to a particular room. My room size is small-to-medium and I didn't want to go to monitors for the room. I like a big sounding speaker and in essence you get the best of both worlds with these speakers. I may get bite back for this comment, but I see the Quattros as essentially a three-way monitor with built-in powered subwoofers that can be tuned to the room. The only drawback is that I'm going from monowired speakers to biwired speakers and I need to change speaker cabling. I understand that the Quattros can be sensitive to both type of cable and length.
Hi,
I have heard the VA and SF models you mentioned and I don't think they are better than the Thiel in anyway.Somehow I feel you compared your Thiel to lesser models and then jumped up the level to the Vandertseens. Not a very good shortlist, IMHO!
Congrats on the Quattro coup!"The Quattros with the black sock are not very attractive.
The nice thing about that is that they have a tendency to disappear
I heard quattros for the first time recently and I thought they might be the best audiophile speaker I've ever heard. They sounded like big quads that played loud and had great imaging.I can't think of any other speaker I'd rather own.
You're lucky!
