In Reply to: Magnepan MG-II No top end! Where's the sizzle? posted by Sweedish Eagle on April 23, 2007 at 15:34:51:
Maggies have a fuse for the tweeters located in the x-over close to the binding post. Make sure also that the jumpers for the tweeters are in place if it is a later model. If fuse and jumpers are OK you may have a blown tweeter.
Follow Ups:
These are the early (1975) MG-II, not the MG-IIC's. I checked the back and there is only two speaker binding posts, no tweeter fuses or bi-wiring posts for the top end. Any other suggestions? Thanks again!!!
You state the speakers are 1975 vintage? I doubt the tweeter is
operational. Put your ear directly up the speaker, move your head left and right. You will hear the woofer panel AND the tweeter panel if all is ok.The wire is aluminum and probably oxidized, failed and the tweeter panel has an open circuit.
Contact Magnapan for a repair kit.
Shine a flashlight from the rear. The tweeter will be a vertical strip on one edge of the actual panel where the perforated panel will have smaller holes. There should be more of a top end from that tweeter strip.
Hi, I will try that right now. I just removed the speaker post and found no fuses anywhere. I just fired them up again and did an A/B comparison to give you guys a better idea of how these sound. I connected Tannoy Stirling on one side and a Magnepan on the other. I turned the treble all the way down on the preamp for the Tannoy and the treble all the way for the Maggie, the result was about the same on the top end response for both speakers playing at the same time. Don't get me wrong, I do get midrange and bass but very little tweeter sound. I don't know if this is normal or not. Here is some of the vintage speakers in my Arsenal, maybe I'm a sucker for their top end and expected the same out of the Maggies; Yamaha NS-1000M's, Tannoy Stirlings, Spendor BC1's, Celestion SL-600's, JBL 4425's, ESS AMT 1D's, and the list goes on and on. This is the first time for me playing with Magnepans and the top end or little to no top end was the first thing I noticed. I hope I cleared a few things up on this posting. Thank you guys again for your response!!!!
