In Reply to: Magnepan MG-II No top end! Where's the sizzle? posted by Sweedish Eagle on April 23, 2007 at 15:34:51:
If you go to the MUG forum, you will find that the specs for your speakers are 50-16,000Hz and it is a 2-way, full range speaker. It does not have the quasi-ribbon or true-ribbon tweeter that the newer Magnepans currently use. Here the link to the MUG forum with specs on virtually all the Magnepans ever made: http://www.integracoustics.com/MUG/MUG/articles/speakers.html

Wow, Thank you for the link and the quick response. I am listening to them right now and I can say this, I can turn the treble control on my Audio Research SP-4 from flat to all treble all the time and I hear just a slight difference (and I mean slight) in top end response. I am just wondering if there was anything wrong with them (Broken tweeter cables, caps etc.) I am handy with the soldering gun but I don't want to take on tha task and maybe ruin a good set of speakers if I don't have to. Any MG-II owner's out there have any suggestions or advice? They sound too dull (at least to my ears) to be considered an audiophile speaker. I know I am not loosing my hearing (at 35 yrs old I better hope I'm not). Thank you guys for your comments.
To further investigate, remove the back plate again and measure the resistance of the fine wires leading to the panel. If it reads open, your tweeter is dead, probably from corrosion. Early Maggies used an uncoated aluminum wire, and they tend to corrode. You'll see whitish fungus looking growths on the wire. While they may have been OK when you auditioned them, they can get very brittle and may have broken on the way home, especially if you had the speaker back lying against on the transports' floor.
and it probably isn't what's causing your problem, but at thirty five you are most likely starting to lose some of your high frequency hearing. I think for most men it starts to degrade a little sooner than that.
