Or, if your room is small, the Bachs used.Either one will have you weeping in your coffee.
Just make sure you wallop them with a lot of high quality power.
I have not heard the Merlins - hope they are good. But I don't agree to one poster, if he is saying that the Quad 21Ls color the sound. I own these speakers for the past 2 years and I keep wondering why would anyone want to upgrade/switch their existing speaker. I am talking about the older version - not the newer L2.kkak66, I suggest that you go and audition the Quads (well broken-in ones) and then decide. If possible, do take your speakers along with you for the audition. It will really give you an idea - if you require a change or you are good with the current setup. Note that a good dealer will always have a very good setup for his/her listening room and your speakers may sound different if your existing room is not as good as the setup in these demo rooms.
Maybe it sounds like I am promoting the Quads - but I honestly feel that they are "sleepers". You need to give them good breathing space, and a long break-in period. If you have a good amp, source and good cables, then you will have years of enjoyment ahead of you rather than the upgrade/change bug.
Having owned the Quad 21Ls for well over a year and a half and having had them fed through one of the most neutral pre-amps on the market (FT Audio Little Wonder) it is very obvious that the speakers are not neutral, especially in comparison to my Duntech PCL10s (especially evident with how the Quads portray horns). They were great speakers and I really enjoyed them, but they were definitely not netural.
Softer and not as forward as Merlins, but also lack the detail and extension of the Merlins
These are accurate, detailed speakers, but less so than the Merlins. Quad dynamic speakers are not really laid back. They are NOT forward, though, like Dynaudio, but not mellow.
What don't you like about the Merlin TSM-MM's?
I like the Merlins just want something a little laid back...maybe one of the floorstanders i mentioned would be good...any thoughts...?
triangle are not noted to be laid back - you might consider spendor, linn, vienna acoustics but why go from a good 'uncolored' speaker like the tsm's that lets you hear what is on the recording whether laid back or bright to one that colors all recordings?
ha ha!!
