I've had lots of nice 'wood box' speakers over the years, Spendor, Harbeth, PMC, etc.I've never put anything on any of them. My PMC's are about a year old and the cherry is really looking beautiful - it has turned a really nice deep, rich color over the past 12 months.
Do you guys put Watco oil or something like that on your nice wood speakers?
Also, I have a small scratch in the top of one (I love my cat, but he gets into (or rather on top of) everything. It's not deep. Is that something I might try to rub out with light steel wool and then polish?
All comments/suggestions/dirty-jokes welcome.

A little dab 'll do ya. Rub it on thinly, let it dry a little, and buff with a clean dry cloth. Put some elbow grease in that elbow!Looks like new wood when you're done.
don't use watco or tung oil or similar oil/varnish finish - they can leave a permanently sticky residue and interact with what the wood is already finished with. some just use a lemon oil but a better way is Howard Restor-A-Shine Polishing Compound and then their Burnishing Cream for a really nice finish. You can also just use a good paste wax like Moser, Brewax, etc. as a last step or just use it instead of the liquids - you can get the wax in a color to match the wood which will take care of the scratch. Avoid the silicones. If you don't like high gloss use 0000 steel oil for applying and polishing for a more satin finish - otherwise a soft cloth works well.
Not on speakers, but on some oak shelves for my rack system, easy quick finish.
Lot's of interesting varnish/lacquer recipes onhttp://www.mother-of-tone.com/lacquer.htm
I dissolved dammar crystals from an art supply store in pure gum turpentine. Takes about a day in the sun, or you can buy dammar lacquer in the store (but best to avoid petro based products in the lacquer.
Photo of my dac made of African Mahogany with Dammar lacquer. You just rub it on with a clean rag.
Yup. wood oil and OOOO steel wool.
