With no signal and at a very low volume put your ear next to them and listen for any noises.Listen very carefully to one and then the other (sitting right next to them) to see if the volume level is the same from both.

Thanks MB. Pardon these basic questions but "no signal" means amp and pre on with CD player in "pause" mode? Is this OK? Am I listening for a hum/white noise output? Am I checking charging status and electrical components? Thanks, Ron
That's right, no signal, but speakers plugged in, system on. You want to hear if the speaker is making a noise on its own. This would indicate an arced panel. (IE, a spark has leapt from one stator plate to the plate on the other side of the driver, piercing the membrane).
MBN, Your procedure sounds like a great pre check and I will surely perform it on these speakers. Would distorted sound in loud musical passages also indicate an arced panel? Sorry for the late reply but the Planar threads are fascinating if not somewhat distracting to one's normal routine(in a nice way, of course).
