In Reply to: Does toe-in affect bass response? posted by greg7 on April 13, 2007 at 20:43:34:
I had been running my Gallo Ref 3s with no toe-in (mostly because I thought they sounded best that way and didn't like them much pointed directly at the listening position). But one day I decided to angle them just a little and ... whoa, where did all that bass come from?No explanation and it must be room-related, although the speakers are at least six feet away from both the rear and side walls. It's well worth experimenting, IMHO.
Follow Ups:
Do you have your Gallo Ref3's with the woofers firing in our out? If out, the bass would be projected forward with toe-in. The opposite with them firing in.
When they were positioned straight ahead (no toe-in), I first had the woofers facing each other. I tried toeing them in at this point and didn't like the result. Then I switched them left-for-right but kepe them pointing straight ahead. Again, tried aiming them at the sweet spot and went back to straight ahead. It was only when I toed them in just a little (with the woofer "canister" visible from the sweet seat), that they locked in and gave me bass I had never heard before. All this and other experimentation took place over a two-hear period during which there were nmerous system changes.
Definitely more than a "two-hear" period :-)
That's why I ask -- I've experienced the same thing, albeit not as dramatically as you have. In theory bass frequencies are omnidirectional but I suppose angles to room boundaries (especially corners) and the direct ratiation pattern of the bass / midbass driver(s) has a big influence. I suspect toe-in causes more overlap in the direct radiation pattern, thereby strengthening the output.
On Gallos you have side firing woofers right? That and the room can/may make a difference of course. When one has many options for location it is always good to experiment.
