going crazy trying to decide what speakers to "upgrade" to - current system consists of a Cary 308t running direct (for the time being) into a McCormack DNA-125 into a pair of Klipsch KG4 - listen primarily to Blue Note/Rudy Van Gelder bebop - listen at humane levels although sometimes I go loud and other times I listen softly (like a morning sunrise ;) ) - I live in a townhouse, so it depends if the neighbors are home - listening room is appx. 12x19x9 with a trayed ceiling at the front and a big picture window in the back - like the "live" sound of the Klipsch but think I could do better - going to listen to Vandys and Spendor this weekend, bringing some discs along - all help appreciated, thanks

I too listened to bebop, actually hardbop jazz if you want to get technical - late 50's - 60's ie. morgan, mobley, blue mitchell, horace silver etc and into soul jazz as well ie. willis jackson, gene ammons, houston person etc. I started out with the maggies 12, an excellent pair of speakers esp. with vocals but I felt that they weren't dynamic enough and now am using Gallo's Ref 3.1 with a rel strata III sub. A great speaker that will sound great at loud volumes but also sounds wonderful at late night listening where the maggies fall short in this dept. Recently went to all tubes with Audio research gear and they sound wonderful. Many people recommend the Vandy's 2ce but felt they were a little too "warm", ie. needed something a little more exciting. Haven't hear the vandy's quatro's but if you could afford them definitely give those a listened. If you're seriously into jazz, definitely invest in a good turntable ie. VPI, Kuzma etc as many recordings are not available on Cd. You will also be blown away with the sense of how natural sounding a vinyl can be - very addicting.
I'm convinced that you won't outrun your acoustical environment, so if you haven't already done so, do some acoustical tweaking. That way you know for sure the best your speakers can do in your real life room. It will also help rule and and out what you might want in a new speaker.Personally, I love the sound of higher end planars, but cannot afford them. So I tried a few suggested box speakers and settled VERY happily on the VR1s (with a sub of my own to match). The entire Von Schweikert line is really great with the type of music you're listening to (or any type I've tried so far). If you can afford and want full floorstanders, the VR4 Jr. line is excellent. If you can only go about half that price, the VR1 (or LCR MTMs) monitors with the VRS/1 sub is an excellent combo.
All in all, the best we can do is suggest some for you to audition and the rest is between your ear and your wallet.
If you can afford them, try a listen at the avantgarde's (unos or duos). They have the dynamism and speed of the Klipsch with a broad soundstage and detail that really goes well with bebop (one of the few speakers that can keep up with Coltrane's Giant Steps...
So did you find something you prefer to your Klpsches?I have been down the same road, and haven't found anything I prefer to my Klipsch Belles. I get the bug, go listen, and find that I can only make trade-offs, nothing better all around.

at least in thier relative price range. If you want Miles, Chet, Diz & the gang in your room with you, there are no other choices in this price range, esp if you don't mind usedused Mag 1.6s ~ 1000-1200
used Mag 3.6s ~ 2800-3000used 2ce Sig ~700-900
used 3A ~2000Maggies seem to hold their value much better
I've owned Mag 1.6s, 3.6s, 20.1s and listened a lot to Vandy 2-3 series
