I'm considering buying a pair of Smaller Advents from someone, but I'm not sure that they've been maintained in the right way. I've heard that some Smaller Advents were produced with surrounds that weren't inverted like on the Large Advents, but even putting that aside the woofer in this picture doesn't look right to me. (I've only seen Large Advents, so I don't have a direct basis for comparison.) Am I just imagining things, or should I pass on these?
Follow Ups:
I have a pair of smaller advents and these look like the original with new foams. I would feel the foams to see if they crack. Check the grill also and make sure they are original as they were designed to complement the sound of advents.
I bought my first set new in 1975 when I was in college. The woofers had surrounds that were like these (except they were not green like these)...they are not supposed to be inverted.Over the years I've had a few sets of smaller advents (through marraige, ironically)...none have been inverted. I have both orange and green tweeter versions.
If you are worried about the woofers, then I would pass. I recently had a set of my Advent woofers refoamed and they don't quite have the bass I remembered when they were new...I am hoping they will break in.
In the same price and size range...I have a set of Dynaco A25's that I like better than the Advents for a variety of reasons...real wood veneer, butyl surrounds that don't need refoaming and there is an upgrade path if you are into that sort of thing (I replaced mine with newer Seas tweeters and they sound much better). Just my 2 cents...
Post this over on the vintage forum. Bold Eagle has forgotten more about Advents than most people will evern know. He loves these things and can give you more detailed advice than anyone. He really knows what he's talking about. Retired Audio Engineer.
Will do. Thanks!
