In Reply to: May we compare the Harbeth Monitor 30 directly with the Spendor SP1/2E?? posted by Mr Blue Sky on April 8, 2007 at 20:43:08:
The Harbeth 30's are wonderful transducers and approach the music with a more aggressive presentation, focusing on a blossomed yet neutral presentation that is actually a bit more clinical than what many Brit speakers are known for.The Spendors by direct contrast are far from neutral and are extremely colored. While the Harbeth's presentation can vary greatly depending on the source and the electronics behind them, the Spendors are usually more uni-lateral and will give off their trademark sound (slightly rolled off highs - big mid-range - punchy but not necessarily deep bass).
If you wish to enjoy a variety of music on warmer sounding electronics in less than ideal situations; Spendor may have the upper hand. However, if you are more about electronic accuracy and listen to primarily excellent reecordings, the Harbeths may be your huckleberry.
Like mbnx01 - I've found the prices, which have really rocketed off the charts, to be less and less competitive to other offerings within the market as time goes on.
However, I must respectfully disagree in regards to Magnepan. They are brilliant speakers and represent an exceptional value in home audio, however; they are not exempt to the yin and yang of audio. They cannot hit as hard or as tout as a dynamic cones and domes speaker can - period. Not the 1.6, 3.2/3.6 or the 20.1. However, the boxless sound can be utterly addicting once you hear it the right way. For some, there is no turning back. While I am not one of those characters, I have to give respect where respect is due.
Follow Ups:
The only thing I would take issue with is the characterization of the Classic Spendors as "extremely colored". By that standard about 75% - 80% of the box speakers in $1K -$3K range are "extremely colored". Both the Harbeths and the Spendors have a personality. The Harbeths are more clinical and the Spendors more romantic. The Maggies are wonderful speakers but they do take a relatively robust amp to drive them properly especially for rock, dub and electronica. They also need about 4'+ of space behind them.
Mr Blue Sky, you need to pony up more information about your (real) budget, room and what you intend to drive these speakers with if you want to get any additional advice of any quality. You already have multiple, excellent (and consistent) characterizations of these speakers that (coupled with Bob Neill's reviews) that are only going be fleshed out by personal auditioning. Since you apparently have the opportunity to hear both speakers and given that neither speaker is close to $1K these posts are starting to sound a bit more like wanking than a serious speaker quest.
It was laughable to read of spendors being colored! They can, along
with quads, sound like you are in the concert hall, especially with
regards to the voice and wind instruments(thier hallmark).
As a BC1 SP1 and sp2/2 owner, i just want to hear if a sp1/2e or
sp2/3e can give me that mid range magic of the original BC1! any
comments?
My budget is unlimited and my gear sounds better than yours.
.
...and yes, I am certain my amplifier sounds better than yours.
can your big brother beat up his?
Only if he could manage to untangle himself from his studded bra straps, fur shackles, and leather gimp mask.

Regarding your married for life comment, I guess I am now a bigamist, since I got a pair of M30's. I find them a lot warmer than your comments suggest.

"Occasionally we list eccentrically, all sense of balance gone."
Warm and cool are higly relative, as we both; and highly dependent on both experience and electronics. To begin with, I had not yet heard Reynauds or Audio Notes when I wrote that. And to follow up, that generation of Blue Circle electronics (especially the AG3000) was a bit cooler than BC gear are today. (The Solfege was so incisive sounding it was soon thereafter removed from the Audiomat line.) I am curious how I would find the M30's now. To repeat my favorite personal audio cliche, experience changes experience.
