I have read convincing reviews of V-caps in amps. Are they also one of the best caps you can get for speaker cross-overs?
A "big" improvement over Auricaps?
Follow Ups:
No direct experience but based on what I've read, it probably depends. For example, in Listener magazine, Art Dudley reported trying Hovland Musicaps in an AudioNote Kit One and he felt the sound was better, but in a Spendor SP1/2, which has a pretty sophisticated crossover, he felt it made the sound more "hi-fi", i.e. worse. I know in some crossovers, the inherent resistance on the capacitor is used to tune the circuit. A different cap with less resistance (i.e. more ideal, "better") may actually mistune the crossover and worsen the overall sound.
JimL is absolutely correct in his response. Although this holds true more for the inductors used in the low pass filter, keeping the resistance at the same level as the original crossover will assure the same characteristics and most important, balance will be maintained.
The best thing to due when changing crossover capacitors is to measure the resistance of the circuit prior to making any changes. If you end up with a resistance that is different from the original, you could always make adjustments to the attanuation circuit to compensate. I would recomemnd listtening first as the change can sometimes be for the better (for you personal taste). When changing out indutors in the low pass filter and using inductors of less DCR, you could simple add a low value (usually .2 - .5 ohm) paralleled with the inductor. Again, voice to preference.
So many people try to upgrade crossover components without taking into considieration the different resistance values of the replacement parts. Just because you replace cheap components with botique parts, does not mean an enhanced performance but if accomodations are made, you can maintain the proper balance in the presentation or voice to suit your personal taste.
Experimentation will be in order here.
By the way, getting back to the original question..... I have been using V-Caps in crossover designs since their introduction.
