Hello,I am a new Magnepan User Group member! I am hoping to find some help with a sub match for my MMGW's. I am leaning towards the HSU VFT 2.3 or the SVS NSD 10. The room size has me concerned based on what I have read.
14'w X 20'h X 18'l
Magnepan said I shouldn't buy anything above a 10" but the HSU website says 12". Receiver is Yamaha 2600. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I suggest the Martin Logan Dynamo at your price range.
This may be an excellent time to get an excellent M&K sub at a great price.
They (Magnepan) probably feel a bigger driver won't be quick enough for the panels. You should not let them dictate your personal tastes and circumstances (and I doubt Magnepan has even heard with a huge variety of subs). Is the primary use of the sub movies or music? If music, what do you like to listen to and how loud? Have you analyzed your room with an RTA? If not you may wish to consider test tones (either downloaded or on a disc) in conjunction with an SPL meter (rivesaudio.com makes a $21 disc that is made to work with the Radio Shack SPL meter) to get an idea. Are you planning to treat the room at all (after you measure)? Not that familiar with the Yamaha but a bigger concern to me is whether it will drive the Maggies properly w/o an outboard amp. I have a friend with the MMGs and a Rotel rec'r and he has an outboard amp in a small to medium sized room.So in essence it is really up to how you will use the products. If you have an average car that has 150hp it is more than enough to get you around town. If you're going to drag race with it, then you have a different situation. Rel subs are nice, they have 2 inputs, one for HT and one that connects to your amp with its own volume control and separate flexible crossover that can be mated to your speakers and room for music playback. They are pricey and not necessarily the biggest bang for the buck for HT output.
Thanks for the suggestions. I have not analyzed the room with a meter yet. The Yamaha has fantastic power @ 130Wx7 @ .04 THD. The system will be used about 80% HT & 20% wide variety of music (country-classical-motown-AC/DC) at moderate levels.REL is out of my price range today. Something in the $500 range is all i can do right now. Any additional suggestions would be appreciated.
Yes - but that power rating is based on a very old FTC test and into 8 ohms and the Magnepans are not 8 ohms (what is the rated output of the Yamaha with all channels driven at 4 ohms if it is capable of that). Your listening habits will play a role whether that is for HT or music. At 80% for HT you may get a bigger bang for the buck with the SVS. For music it depends on what type of listener you are. Whatever you go with, I'd want to know the room response as bass can have problems in lots of rooms. Bass frequencies can also get boosted with certain crossover frequencies in certain rooms. Before I'd invest in a sub I'd want to know how the low frequency response is in the room and what type of crossovers the Yamaha offers. The room is the most overlooked component.
