Hi there,I have a pair of JMR Twin Signatures sitting on some cheap 28" stands at the moment and am looking to get a new pair of custom Skylans. JMR's own stands are 28" high but I have read several reviews of these speakers done on 24" stands and several people have said that it is better to have the Twins woofer at ear level rather than the tweeter (and apparently, JMR has confirmed this to at least one reviewer).
Anyhow, just wondering what others are using for stands with their Twins and if I should go for 24" or 28" stands. My ear level ranges from 36" to 38" usually. 24" stands would put the middle of the woofers at 36". I could get any height I want since I am going custom but since listening height varies for me a bit I wonder if I should err on the low side or the high side with regards to stand height.
Thanks in advance.
Follow Ups:
Which puts the middle of the Twin tweeter at 34 inches in my house. And as you know they have deflectors on them. Since JMR himself designed these stands for Twins and Trentes, I expect he thinks the height is about right. If you're concerned, I would go higher rather than lower. But I've never felt I was missing anything with the MS's 27 inch height.
Thanks Bob.It makes sense that the Magic Stands are the correct height for the Twins (of course, that assumes a certain ear level). I just find it strange that JMR confirmed to another user that the woofer should be at ear level. Maybe the designer sits in a really high chair?
I have JMR Twin MKIII. Read the same reviews. Started on 24" Target stands. Sounded great.. Recently moved to Magic stands (28") from Bob at Amherst. Really just wanted the whole JMR experience.
There is a difference.
Not sure if the issue is height or design.
Bass is a bit better. Tighter? Fuller? Not sure
I think the Magic stands made a positive impact.
They are not really very stable but they seem to work.
Look good.Regards.
Stick a bit o' Blue Tak under 'em and they get very stable!
Thanks. Do you happen to know what your ear level is in your chair? The not stable part is a little worrysom. I'm also a little concerned about how they will mate with my floor. A little reading suggests that spikes/footers are not a good idea with these stands. I would have to blue tack them to couple them to the floor as well as compensate for the slight unevenness of the floor so they don't wobble. Maybe not a big deal, not sure.
Not sure I want to spend $400 on stands that aren't so stable, might be too high for my listening chair, might be difficult to couple to my floor and so on. I'll definitely have to see if my local JMR dealer has a pair I can demo.
I'd just get the Magic stands. I does make a big difference.
Well, I have no problem buying the Magic Stands if they are as good as claimed. My concern is the discrepancy between what different people recommend as far as stand height goes. The Magic Stands are 28" and that would put the tweeter at ear level in my situation. If that is how JMR intended things to be that's cool. But, I have read several reviews where 24" stands were used/recommended. One user review even references a confirmation he got from JMR through an email that the woofer should be at ear level. Hence the confusion. The other concern I have is that I can't remember seeing the Magic Stands with any footers or spikes on them. My floor is laminate wood over concrete and is not perfectly flat. I need to be able to use soft footers or Superspikes, either 4 that I can adjust or 3 for self leveling. Are the JMR stands supposed to sit directly on the floor without any footers or spikes?

I gave in and ordered some Peets Major Dickenson's Roast, but then Light House out of Seattle said they would ship me some of their to Denmark. That is really good stuff. Stumptown from Portland is also good.I spent 13 years of my life in the PNW. All my kids went to college or grad school in Seattle, Tacoma or Portland. Now, they have all spread to the wind.

The "overall" height is around 28 inches, but that includes spikes, which no one I know uses. But that does suggest that 28 inches is what JMR has in mind, not the 27 inches I am accustomed to without spikes.
I'll also bet that moving the Twins up or down a inch or two would be inaudible to all but real audio nuts. These are not very picky speakers.
