There are a pair of MagnePlanar MG3 for sale in my town. The owner asks for $500. I believe those are original MG3 not 3.5 or 3.6. I have a pair of 845C mono blocs, which I don't think have enough juice for Maggie. However, I have a spare Denon POA-2800, which have a lot of power. My question is whether it is worth buying the speakers. I mainly listen to classic and jazz.
Follow Ups:
A mate of mine has MGIIIs (the original 3-way) in a room which I think is far too small for them. It must be only about 11 or 12' wide - so his Maggies are jammed up against the side walls.Yes, they sound great but I suspect he'd actually get a better listening experience from the smaller Maggies. My own listening room is 27' x 17', so my IIIas fit this really well. :-))
BTW, you can easily convert the III into a IIIa ... it's simply a XO change.
Beware of delaminated wires, as other your posters have already warned. You really need to strip off the socks and have a good look, before you buy.
Regards,
IMHO nothing else quite has that Maggie Magic. Maggie is not a harsh mistress, but she is a demanding one. If you like the sound and can put up with the demands she makes; lots 'o current and fussy placement, then $500 doesn't sound too bad a price ... depending on condition!Remember, these are probably all of 25 years old. Send some bass through them and listen for any rattles or buzzing sounds. Buzzing indicates that the "voice coil" wires have come unglued from the mylar. Either have to ship to Magnepan for repair or do it DIY. Make sure the ribbon tweeters work.
Spend some time reading and searching the archives on the MUG (planar-stats-ribbons) page 2 clicks down from here before you jump with your money.
I've always been a fan of Magnepans. If you can accommodate their placement requirements and do not expect "kick in the stomach" dynamics from them, they do a wonderful job. They do, however, need lots of power if you want dynamics. Decades ago, I ran a pair of MG-IIs . . . with 200 righteous watts per channel, and they sounded excellent.
Check the condition of your pair, if you can, before buying.
Well the 3.6 is about 4400 smackersI think 500.00 is probably a pretty good deal if they are working well
