I just heard the Bach grands and Mozart grands next to each other at Magnolia. There was not very much different between the two. This was very surprising to me. I actually thought the Bachs produced more bass! (?????) The Mozarts produced more anc slightly cleaner highs. But not "much" better.
In my previous comparisons, the Mozarts very clearly won. But not today.
Has anybody else come away thinking that the Bachs sounded about equal to the Mozarts?
Follow Ups:
so much so that I just purchased a set of Bach Grands in Rosewood (outstanding!) for my living room system. To me the Mozart also sounded midrange-heavy and compressed? especially at louder levels. I heard them both at BB/Mag and a local dealer where they were matched with some expensive gear. The Bach impressed me much more during both listening sessions and I definitely could not see paying $1000 more for the Mozart. Unfortunately, I learned today that I will have to wait another 2-3 weeks for my speakers after being told they could get me a pair from California in 10 days, and that was 10 days ago!
Keep us posted when you get them and your experience!
I actually work for Magnolia, and I have found that the Bachs are much better without a subwoofer. If you only have a stereo setup, the Bachs are better for you. If you are able to attach a Rel sub, the Mozarts are going to have a much better range and much more full sound. To my ear, the Mozarts give a much larger sound stage with much more accurate tones when played with a Rel Q sub. And you are also quite right about the Magnolia store not always having the best setup. If you want to hear the best sound on the VA speakers, ask for the Denon 397 Stereo receiver.
Why did Magnolia drop Primare. No offense, but hooking up the Vienna's to a Denon stereo receiver does no justice? I'm confused as to why they went lower end on their electronics selection.
Hooking the VA Bach up to a Denon receiver is like lipstick on a pig. They truely deserve better...much better. Shame the only place you can find them now is at a stinkin Best Buy.
They are also available at Harvey Electronics in NYC Metro. They carry Mac, Krell, higher end NAD. And their rooms are much better than Magnolia. The setup at the Magnolia in Bridgewater NJ is a disgrace.
When you say "the Bachs are much better without a subwoofer," do you mean, "much better than the Mozarts"?
...that Bach is better than Mozart if you don't have a sub, or that Bach is better without a sub than with?
I have the Haydn Grand and I think the Bach uses the same tweeter with the port running on 2 sides of the tweeter. But I believe models from Mozart Grand and up, use a better tweeter. I once did a brief comparison and thought the more expensive models sounded better in the treble. They were less metallic and splashy sounding.FWIW, I think VA makes good speakers. Not the best, but honest, good, enjoyable speakers for real life domestic environment without being mumbo-jumbo exoctica! ;p
Hi, I listened to the Bachs and Mozarts(both 'Grand' versions), also
at Magnolia and actually liked the Bachs better. To me, the Mozarts
were too midrange forward and brought listening fatigue quickly(I experienced this at several locations). Bear in mind, Magnolia does not always have great set-ups, electronics, positioning, etc. and I have been assured by several that the Mozart is indeed a better speaker, but I have never experienced that, even the previous versions, before the 'Grand' versions when 'Tweeter' carried them, I liked the Bachs better, thought it had a more organic quality. Also, now the Bach is both front and rear ported (the front port is behind the tweeter) and the limited reviews and comments I have seen says this works extremely well. Also, with this dual port design, you can put it closer to a back wall than the Mozarts if needed. Hope this helps.
