I've got some Infinity SM150's and they're an awesome speaker, but the foam in each of the 15" woofers is absolutely destroyed. I went to speakerrepair.com and I can get the re-edging kits for $30 each, or ship them out and they'll do it for $45 each. So I guess I need to know how hard it is to properly replace the foam edging. As with most thing, doing it doens't look too hard, but doing it right is another story. And just out of curiosity, what are your experiences with these speakers?

Alright, I finally got around to trying to replace the foam surround, but there's a plastic ring around the outer edge that I can't get off. Any ideas? The outer lip of the foam goes under this platic ring, so I need to get it off

Wooferrepair.com I mention this because I just got a kit from them and it comes with glue and shims AND... a free dvd showing how its done. If your at all handy do it yourself. It's not hard. It's so easy I now go around looking for bad speakers to repair :)
Lots of archived posts per this subject over in the Vintage forum catagory, do a search there. Could you fix a leaky faucet or running toilet? Could you change oil & filter on your car? IOW if you are NOT a handyman, having someone else do it for you makes sence. But if you ARE handy with tools & fixing things, then DIY re-foaming is realtively easy. The main thing is to get the surfaces clean of old foam for success in attaching the new.

Also check out the kits at Partsexpress.com. I just did my first re-foam on a pair of thrift store Advents a few months ago, it was easy, even for ME! Basically, if you have eyesight and don't have Parkinson's, you can do this. The video mentioned below sounds nice, but the written instructions and the job are straight forward enough you don't need the video.The job shouldn't take more than 1-2 hrs/speaker, not counting some set up time for the glue between processes. Let the glue cure overnight and you can re-install them the next day and begin breaking them in slowly.
Weigh that against the extra $ plus $ for shipping, AND the 2-3 weeks transit and "in que" time at the shop. Even if you attempt it and decide you can't/don't want to do it, you can always send 'em in and you're really not out all that much.

That would be $30/pair for the refoam kits as opposed to $45 each + shipping to have them do it, right? Do it yourself, it's not hard at all. I've never dealt with speakerrepair.com but these guys: http://www.newfoam.com/kits.asp will sell you a little video for $2 with a refoam kit and the video will show you how to do it.
