I have a pair of Snell E/III speakers the woofer surrounds of which are disintegrating. I suppose the easy fix would be to get them replaced. However, I would like to know if anyone has an opinion about an upgrade to this model, especially in view of the technological advances in design since these were introduced. Thanks

Thanks for the response! I called Snell, but the Customer Svc Dept returns calls between 12:00-2:00PM. By upgrade I meant getting newer drivers from Snell, if that makes sense. The link provided by
Stuart showing the procedure for replacing the surrounds certainly appears doable. It would presumably restore the speakers to their original state, which is good. I guess my question is, can they be better, or should I leave "good" alone?
The difficulty of just putting improved components in a speaker is that the resulting mismatch may make things worse. Cabinet volume, porting issues (if ported), crossover frequencies, roll-off rates, and all manner of other electrical and mechanical parameters are designed as a "system" in a quality speaker.Think of a car. You generally just can't take a part from one make and model of a car and hang it on another and expect better performance.
That said, if you are an avid tinkerer, or have the knowledge and experience to try and improve the design yourself, have at it. Just keep in mind that experimenting is just that and it may take you many iterations before your changes actually result in true improvement. Some people get a lot of enjoyment out of that process but many don't. Figure out where you stand on that line before you start.
They are matched for the xovers /cabs/tweetersSpend the 25.00 first and repair them
Make your decision after they are repaired and running
Thanks for your advice. I just ordered the kit. Waiting with keen anticipation. What a great forum this is!!!
Easy fix
Simply go to this site and order out new surrounds for them
They have a video and complete instructions on replacing
the surrounds
I bet they still have the serial numbers on file. They did for my E's that I bought in 1982.
an upgrade as in shopping for new speakers, then there is something for everyone. I went from Snell E to Tannoy D700's and could not be happier. Listen to as many speakers in your price range as possible and let your ears decide.
