There seems to be quite a few people who prefer the HSE to the newer SR model. I have both here right now and I must say that the difference is not miniscule and I do prefer the HSE. It is more neutral and has a deeper, wider soundstage. The biggest difference is the transparency in the mids. Perhaps this is why the HSE was the longest lasting 4 model from Von Schweikert. Now neither is as good as the reviews, no they don't compete with $20,000 speakers, but they certainly, the HSE in particular, more than holds it's own against the WP I have on hand.
With used HSE around $3500 it's a good buy.
Follow Ups:
I've compared the two as well on several occasions, including in the same room, and I greatly prefer my HSEs. On the used market, they're an AMAZING deal. Personally, and I've said this before, I think the HSE was one of the best speakers Albert ever designed. I don't know where he went wrong with the SR, but I don't think time is gonna be particularly kind to it.
So, are you comparing the VR 4 SR MK 2 model ?
Yes.
Yes just got the MK2 a couple weeks ago.
How does the VR4 SR MK2 compare to the HSE version and the Watt Puppy?
Just bought them , thats why I am asking.
I havent played them yet.
I think he answered your question in his original post.
Is the VR4-SR that you have the new Mk-II version?
I share your feelings about the Sr. vs. the HSE. Haven't heard the WP, so can't comment there. This isn't the first time you have posted to this effect. But it would carry more weight if you were a registered member. Now about this:

The current WP is a 20K+ speaker. Obviously you are talking about a previous incarnation?
Yes the 6. I thought a seperate thread might get noticed more as I'd like feedback. The consensus seems to be the nidrange change and the different crossover points make the niggest differemce. I will register.
The MK2 were well broken in and I ran 100 hours of break in tracks.
Just trying to get this straight. You bought the VR 4 SR MK2 a couple weeks ago and are comparing that version to a VR 4 HSE version.
So, now the question is , the HSE has to be well broken in, is the SR MK2 broken in or just 2 weeks old?
