A local individual is selling a pair of Vandersteen 2Ce (not signature) in good condition for $400. I suspect these will be a great improvement over my current speakers, Advents.Should I go for the Vandersteen?
Follow Ups:
Go for it. I had some 2Ci's for many years and it's a great speaker to build a system around. Every component upgrade made the speakers sound better. So they will improve as does your system. I found the Sound Anchor stands to be worth it over the standard Vanderstands. They also really improved when I invested in some decent bi-wired speaker cable. These won't win any awards in any one catagory, but overall do well in all of them. The price makes them a bargin. Worst trait is they aren't the most focused sounding speaker. Best trait is that they are very easy to listen to.
...I migrated from a double pair of Large Advents to the Vandersteen 2C pair I still use today. Although I suspect I'd like 2Ce Sigs or especially 3A Sigs better I *still* think my plain jane 2Cs (no "e" or "i" are a wonderful pair of speakers...and oceans better than the Advents I sold to acquire them.
If there's nothing wrong with them, I don't think you can go wrong. You might want to check what Vandertseen would charge you to upgrade them to the latest version of the 2 CE Sig. That is an extremely fine speaker, with a performance far beyond what one might expect for a speaker at its (new) price, and you might be able to get there for a bargain. I think they are in another world of quality compared to the Advents.
Upgrade cannot be done on those

Your large Advents are a classic, coveted by many enthusiasts, which can fetch you a good resale price if you're careful. This in turn, may get you the Vandy's for very little or nothing in net cost.
A lot of people, me included, would be interested in findings from an A-B test of these speakers versus pair of Large Advents in excellent condition. What are the differences and similarities? How does the deep bass compare, for example? Can the Vandersteens make a pipe organ roar like the Advents do? To me the Vandersteens are the high water mark in moderately priced modern speakers, but the Advents were that in their time as well.Large Advent owner since 1973
I've compared 2C (not e) against both the large and powered Advents a long time ago...I'll preface this with I liked the powered A's better that the large that were being driven by a nice Threshold amp - this was 20 years ago remember. But the 2C's impressed me more. The e version is a little more forward but I've always liked the Vandersteens presentation, bottom end and is probably the speaker I recommend to most because of its position as what I think the best full range for the buck. - Add a sub to the mix and there's a lot of choice. @ $400 you will not be disapointed if they are all working right.
What is wrong with them?
Are they 2 Cis? That was a cheaper speaker.
Make sure you get a copy of the manual for the 2Ces. Do they come
with any floor anchors? If so you will definitely need to see a
manual to get the placement and pitch back angle correct.Good luck,
Yup - only drawback is careful placement

Great price for a very good speaker. How old are your advents, 30 years or so?:)
Definitely go for it but be prepared to update your other equipment to go along with the new speakers, it will be worth it.
