Is there any scientific way to assess, quantify, identify, or validate:The dimensionality (height, width, depth) of the soundstage. 3-D or not 3-D...
The "suchness" of sound. Sometimes, voices and instruments just sound more like themselves...
The body or corporalness (corpulence?) of the individual sonic images. 3-D or not 3-D, yet again...
The amount of "air" between and around the instruments and voices.
The accuracy of overall tonal balance and presentation: How much does it sound like what the recording engineers' devices actually recorded?
Just curious. But it would sure make the asylum dull if there WERE such instruments; all debate would shorten or cease ... or perhaps the ammunition of opinion would just be replaced with the ammunition of science....
Cheers! (That sound to you exactly like they sound to me.... And how the hell do you determine that?! :-)

Follow Ups:
There are many 3D sound processors out there which sound amazing. This mean that some designers have a mastery of the 3D effects. Since they can actually market 3D products a lot of R&D and money goes into the effort. Who is going to spend the money just the measure the 3D effects of stereo speakers?BTW I always liked the effects I got from Bob Carvers Sonic Holography when played on phase coherent speakers. That technology has been taken much further.

Yeah, right!
No more debates!
I don't think so.
We'd still debate which reviewer/scientist does the best measurements, assuming there was a good method to measure inside ouyr brains without drilling holes in our skulls and attching wires with solder, like we do now. Then some audiophiles would claim they can hear better than those $%#&@ measurements, and others would claim the self-proclaimed golden ears were exaggerating to make themselves look superior.
Then the usual character attacks would start.
Soon people would be comparing each other's posts to piles of steaming horse by-products or comparing each other's families to various farm animals.
And finally someone would be compared with Hitler ... after which the whole thread would be tossed into Whiner's Woad, where I am the self-appointed Moderator, but have no idea how to delete anything, so there it will stay forever after.
Care to debate my prediction?

No debate, just a hearty LOL in response to your post! Thanks for the morning guffaw.
IMHO, given the right equipment and experience, I think it is possible to have an idea.

Thanks. That was quite informative about Harman's process of figuring out which sound to go for.I'm still curious about the such things as suchness, air, soundstage dimensionality, and the like if you know of any more articles.
