Has anyone gone back to passive speakers after owning active speakers? I currently own ATC Active 10s and am considering such a move. I would like to upgrade to floorstanders with more bass and greater dynamic range, but the larger ATCs are out of my budget. Also, I find that my ATCs sound a bit "thinner" than I would prefer.I wonder, though, what I would be giving up by going back to passive speakers. Any input would be much appreciated.
Follow Ups:
Never ever ever. I love my Quad 12L Actives to death, and if I didn't have them, I'd probably move up to some ATC, PMC, or Genelecs. I also augment the Quads with a Velo DD sub.I've compared the Active 12L's directly with their passive consumer counterpart (using a remote controlled switcher), and there is absolutely NO comparison. The Actives blow the passives away.
An active speaker won't sound as good as a passive one with better overall design, better drivers, etc. I love the tricks my Meridian M2 active speakers could play - and its Kef drivers were very good. But when I heard a pair of Linn Isobariks, I heard better speakers overall. That's too limited an experience to draw general conclusions from, I know. So let's see what others say.
Have you tried to position them closer to the floor, tilted up? Room treatments?
"I find that my ATCs sound a bit "thinner" than I would prefer."then get an equalizer e.g Behringer deq2496 and insert between the preamp and the speaker and tweak the sound, in ATC natural stumping ground, that what the users will do. Based on your comments, the Frequency response requires some tweak, after that, voila!

If it's thin sounding, most likely the tweeter is a little hot ?
I would ask ATC if there is a way to reduce tweeter amps level ?Or, drive the woofer a bit harder ?
Either of these should be easy enough in an active system ?
