Hello,
I am going to attempt to upgrade the caps for the tweeter and midrange in my Unity Audio Signature 1 speakers while the woofers are off being repaired. I am leaning toward the Hovland Music Caps or the DynamiCap (Mundorfs are a bit expensive). I would appreciate any opinions on these caps before I purchase. Also, If I am trying to achieve 7.5mF would it be better to go with a 6mF + 1.5mF or a 7mF + .47mF.
Thanks,
Mark

Caps have different ESR, and sometimes this was taken into account in the crossover filter design.
Thus, a better cap will not always sound better.
I have drastically improved some speakers using better caps, and I have also ruined some too.TRY and save the old caps, in case the new ones do not work out.
Or, keep trying new ones until you find some that do.For a cheap cap, I have had luck with Bennic Polyproplyne's, and like them better generally then Solens.
Auricaps are a step up, and then Mundorf and Jensen, and wonder caps.
...correct sir!!I have a pair of Fried Beta signature speakers and in my younger days, I thought I could get better resolution if I replaced the electrolytic caps in the series X-over to polypropolene and the swap did not improve anything, in fact, it made it worse!!!
Not sure if the degradation has anything to do with the series X-over topology but I'm sure glad I kept all the old caps!! One of these days I'm gonna restore the X-over back to the lytics.
Swapping caps does NOT always achieve the results one may think it might as I found out.
Cheers,
Well, I'm wondering if I should just forget about it. Many people have said that DynamiCaps, Hovland or Mundorf caps would be a significant upgrade over the stock Solens and SCRs. It would be an expensive failure if the resolution were actually degraded. I remember that the Unity's selling point was that time coherence was achieved in the crossover so I am somewhat leery in changing anything.
Solens and SCR are very good caps. One can certainly change the "flavor" or "tonality" of the speaker by swapping in exotic caps BUT one must ensure that the electrical characteristics of the caps are the same and if not, the results one hears has more to do with the mismatch in the electrical interaction of the x-over circuit/driver than anything to do with the materials the cap is constructed with.
"I remember that the Unity's selling point was that time coherence was achieved in the crossover so I am somewhat leery in changing anything."While true time alignment has alot more to do with just the X-0ver, I would be hesistant to change out the caps but that is just me, especially with a product with the pedigree that Unity audio has :-)
Cheers,~kenster
I would go Auricap,,,, or save for Mundorf silver/oil...but stop there. BARE is correct IMO on stacking caps in signal paths.. All bad IMHO.. get 1 correct value cap for each spot..smearing is all I hear when stacking..
Having 'tried' Hovlands I bought Solens :-) Do try for a single cap (remembering that the Typ. tolerances are large so close is 'good enough')there is audible difference with ganged caps and it's not for the better.
great quality for the price. i've heard good things about jantzen too. don't get carried away, i think caps are the new "cable madness" ;-)
