In Reply to: why sonus faber stopped fabricating such fabulous speakers ? posted by D.D.C on October 21, 2005 at 02:33:07:
Probably because they discovered somewhere along the way that two way speakers have severe dynamic limitations in terms of bass dynamics regardless of midrange and treble performance.
Follow Ups:
I understood that it was because Dynaudio refused to sell them any more D330's but I heard that third hand so it could be ficticious.
I doubt that. Sonus faber stopped production of the Extrema with the introduction of the EA2 long before Dynaudio stopped selling drivers through retail. Besides, SF continue to use and Dynaudio continues to supply them with Esotars for the Guarneri though so there is absolutely no reason why they should not use Esotars on their newer speakers except maybe it does not fit their design criterias anymore.
Dynaudio drivers are no longer sold as OEM's anylonger. The esotar in the Guarnari is custom built for Sonus Faber with a pear wood resonance chamber. Even the sonus faber Scan Speak dual concentric dome tweeter is simply a custom design of the Vifa dual concentric dome tweeter for the Cremona line up. It is a better driver, precisely matched to their luscious Scan Speak Revelator woofer.
So when you have stuff custom built, you have guarantees on the delivery of these items. But when the contract ends, so does the guaranteed supply. This is what happened to the Extrema model.
I love the Cremona Auditor. If it had the esotar tweeter it would be a perfect monitor! That is why I custom made my own Guarnari wanna be speakers!
I use 3" MB Quartz titanium domes from 2,750 to 9,000 and a Foster ribbon from 9,000 to 40,000 hz. The sound is so perfect I can close my eyes and I am there in the recording space with the performers.
