How useful are these computer programs for Xover design? Is there a computer program that includes enough parameters to make it possible for those with basic knowledge to create a first rate Xover or are the major decisions still to be made in the heads of experienced experts?

Major decisions still to be made in the heads of
experienced experts? The 'experts' have been going down the wrong road for years.
Suggest using band-pass filter networks, for the old concept
of 'cross-overs' filters no matter how well 'designed' are
poor circuits to use.
Email us and we will send to you three 'bandpass' circuits
that anyone can tweak and get great results.
... then again so is asking drivers to operate beyond their natural parameters. IME, the dedicated midrange is far superior to the 2 choices. FWIW, I still like my 1st-order bifricated 4-way XO. So, no phasing problems.

The tweeter's high-pass eventually goes 12dB/octave at the center XO, and so does the woofer's low-pass,ans phasing output. Also, the large dome mid-tweeter is ideal for an upper midrange driver, which allows for close adjacent mounting that's so @#$%&* crucial for imaging in small wavelengths where even eccentric interference patterns colors the sound with discontinuous nuances IMHO.

Any computer program is only going to be as good as the information fed into it. LEAP, CALSOD, LMS, and some freeware programs like those from FRD Consortium and Speaker Workshop will all do a fine job in assisting in crossover design. But, you have to feed them acurate SPL and impedance measurements, know when the phase is right, select the proper crossover points and slope, apply BDS in just the right amount, select drivers that are compatible with each other, and so forth. In other words, you just don't plug in a couple of numbers, push "enter" and get a superlative crossover. If it was that easy, we'd all be able to do it.
thanks,The site info is most helpful though I do take on board your point about their limitations.
