This post is prompted by the previous replies of 2 forum members suggesting that the Paradigm S2 was the best imaging speaker they ever heard. Many "audiophiles" on this board go in for very big, multi-way speakers with numerous cross-overs that need a ton of watts to drive them. And there are the purists in the other direction as well.
Why shouldn't a traditional bass reflex 2-way monitor speaker image well? Why shouldn't any well designed 2-way monitor speaker image well? The high quality ones all do, from the minis to the midis, plus having a tonal quality in their frequency range that is standard for the big guns to match.
Everyone thinks they need a speaker that can play catchup with Bartok, Rumble like Puff Daddy, a spot the guy in the upper right of the colloseum playing the triangle, and who knows what else. But 90% of all music and 99% of the enjoyment is within the reach of 2-way speakers.
I don't see why Paradigm should be considered exceptional, unless your standards are biased by whiz-bang technology audiophiles who focus on extremes, generally at the expense of other things. And if you want to spend $20,000 or more on 2-way monitors speakers, there is at least one company that can help you do that. But for the rest of the world, you can spend between $500 and $1500 (or even $2000+ in the case of the S2's and a few others, not $10,000-up) on a good mini-to-midi monitor and get supurb results.
That's what i think.
What am i missing?
What do you think?

ypu are missing almost nothing..my way of thinking is like yours, I ove a good tw way design as well and tere are many extremely well executed designs out there. I love to keep it simple.
It's easier to do it with a good 2 way and cheaper, of course, also. But it can be done with large speakers also with a lot more work and a lot more knowledge. The Pipedreams are a huge 4 piece, 3 way speaker that imaged terrifically. And there are others. Your idea is a fine compromise for the dollar. But for those few who can afford it, it is possible to have it all(almost all - we still have a way to go even in the greatest designs).
Off course I agree, but many who are searching end up with compromises, and almost everyone thinks about moving up, not down to solve the compromise problems. I was hoping more people would take the bait.
