I have a pair of Wharfedale Emerald 97's (125 watts power handling) being driven by a Sansui 881 receiver (60 watts). The bass driver on one speaker distorts even at low volume at certain times; it seems that only certain frequencies cause it to distort. It's sort of like a crunching sound. I haven't cranked the volume too much, but I'm wondering if somehow I've damaged this speaker. Are these speakers permanently damaged? They're not really even broken-in yet.I've swapped the channels and tried a different amp, by the way.

The voice coil has been damaged. Your UNDER-powering the speakers.
Do you really think they're damaged? Is there any way to be sure? That would "suck;" I've barely turned them up at all.
The voice coil has been thermally melted from being sent a highly distorted signal, probably cranking the bass way up or the volume or both. Most Jap amps clip or distort at around 1:00 on the volume control, earlier if the loudness is on or the bass is increased. Remember, bass frequencies 200hz and down take 85% of the amplifiers available power. Warranty will replace drivers, but you NEED a bigger, better amp, k?
Yes, it seems I definitely need a more powerful amp. Thank you for the help.
Anytime. BTW.....look into buying a better amp. High current, low negative feedback type. Something solid....ok?
