Don't expect a followup in the Morning Call. Since this was an Ebay issue and therefore probably interstate, it's gonna be under federal jurisdiction (at least it should be). I have a neighbor that's a Whitehall cop, if I see him in the next couple of days I'll try to get more information.BTW - I'm 100% Penna Dutch (both sides); my paternal grandfather was a long time member of the Grundsow. His side of the family came over from Austria about the same time as your wife's family. Keep in mind that "Deitsche" is dialectic for "Deutsche" which is "German". Early non-German speaking settlers confused this for "Dutch", hence Penna Dutch.

You're right, and I don't even get the paper daily anyway so my chances of seeing a reply were slim. I only posted it because most people might not follow thru like those buyers did feeling it won't pay off, and I wanted to show that sometimes it does.Ain't choo dat Bob Rex wot lives in Schnecksville once? Vy, den you is a Dutch audio-fiffle! Dats wonderful good.
My wife is half Bavarian, and half Swiss. I'm all Polish.
Yes, yes , yes, I understand german, I had 3 years of it in high school and I know what Deitsche means. What you and everyone else must remember, is "facts" don't mirror reality. Your and my wives ancestors were called "dutch" for 3 centuries by "dem enklisch". It was an error that became fact. They ARE the PA dutch, THEY call themselves PA dutch because it's what they've been called for 300 years.
Yes, it is gramatically incorrect, but it is historically accurate. I don't like that one group of people suddenly decides history is going to be "made right" and change the entire thing. Should we stop calling indians indians too? That was Columbuss' mistake, there are no indians here. You see what I'm driving at?
People are stupid, we make mistakes and those mistakes creep into our culture. I don't think they should be eradicated to simply make the world "tidy" and PC.
Hey Naw, that's me oncet."Dem Enklisch" screwed up the pronunciation too. They just did it a lot sooner :) The Germans were called "Dutch" back then for the same reasons.
So you got a problem with "Native American"? (Insert proper sarcasm here) I agree with you, I just enjoy looking at the origins of words.
So, you wanna skewer "African American" while we're at it?
The PA Dutch diet - fat, fried fat, breaded fried fat, peas and corn.
And yet many of them still live well into their eighties!
I have no problem with native american, I have a problem with being forced to ONLY use the term native american.I THOUGHT we had freedom of speech here..... :^ )
Etymology is fine, but since I am actually a period woodworker by trade who specializes in PA "German" things, I hear that one ALL the time. It's become an annoying factoid the ignorant have embraced and they can't wait to parade around to people that they know the dutch really weren't dutch, they're germans and the english were too stupid to know deitsche meant german etc.... If I had a nickle... and if I had any hair left I'd be pulling it out too... :^ ) That's why it sets me off.
African American huh? I can think of a few but I'd better not say them.
I think we should all just try to be "Americans" first and foremost and worry about the geneology over cocktails.
Yes, with my wife it's salt. You never saw such a thing! She doesn't put salt on things, she has things to put on her salt. Her mothers mother was like that so they say. (lived to be like 90 too) I figure she's just pickling herself, and she wouldn't be doing it if her body didn't tell her it wanted it. She hardly drinks either.
Ha ha, LOL! You are a dutchman. You dutchified that last sentence without even trying. And "yet" many of them....
So what kind of gear do you boys have up in Schnecksville?
My post is all.
