It is one of two things.1. They look for expensive items on the net etc. They get your postal address. They burglarize your home, stealing the item and anything else they see. Of course, this happens before any cheque or money order arrives. Of course they can pretend to be anywhere.
2. I'm not sure about this, but possibly in order to wire money in that way, you have to include your bank account number. bingo ...I'm pretty sure its #1; hence the elaborate business about their arranging the shipping. Selling a valuable item in ebay recently (or trying to), three different scammers of this kind emailed me.

Sorry, could you explain what is wrong with bank account number? Just wondering...
I don't know. I was thinking vaguely that if they have your bank account number and your address, and they have already both received money and put money into it (via the cheque), they might be able to withdraw money (especially if are fronted by some bogus bank or something).
I doubt it... They can't do that "long distance" - they will need passwords, logins, often a special key table to approve transactions and/or biometrics devices, smart cards etc. In person - too much risk, they have to know and be able to fake a signature and provide a "valid" ID, and what if they know you personally in this bank and then someone shows up and poses as you? They will simply call the cops...Besides, wire transfer is a standard procedure in business, especially international. I haven't heard of anybody who lost his money because someone found out his bank account info. Much more dangerous is a spyware\keyloggers. THIS way they can find out your bank access info and be able to transfer money from your account IF your bank is stupid enough to rely solely on password and login - but in this case, don't wait - change the bank to something normal. ;)
Keyloggers can gain access through electronic systems. Stolen passwords and online account IDs are the way to steal funds.Having bank account routing/account numbers isn't going to get money out of a bank account, which will require a person to show up in person, and that person will be carded (to do a wire transfer).
.
So that sounds like what they need - the physical address. It's all pretty spooky, because they might find my address some other way, and try to case the joint.
