I too had a deal go sour with this con artist on a Mcintosh amp. Live and learn, live and learn.
I doubt he's going to send the amp before you send payment. Was it an eBay or Audiogon ad you were responding to? You have his address and phone number which he wouldn't have supplied if it were a blatant scam. Try phoning him. Beyond that, I think you should just exercise the normal precautions you would with any deal. If you can't get comfortable with the deal, use an escrow service. I used escrow.com on one deal and it worked well. Service fee was around $25
I'm not stupid enough to send this guy money wired.
Then you need to engage one of the escrow service companies. This is exactly the situation they cater to.
I had an encounter with this dude. He was selling a Joule amp. Refused escrow. Is a con man. Avoid like the plague.
