Hello, I recently posted a pair of Soundlab U-1 electrostatic speakers for sale on www.audiogon.com, I went 30 days without a single bite and a Soundlab dealer who had been watching my ad contacted me and proposed to trade me a pair of SL prostats for my SL U-1's . He seemed very genuine and honest and this was pretty much an answer to my prayers as I had intended to purchase a pair of prostats ( same as majestic ) after I sold my U-1's.
I sent him $1,100 via paypal to cover shipping cost ( very large and heavy speakers ) for four huge wooden shipping crates to be shipped Utah / Ohio and long story short......he took my money and never produced any speakers and will not refund my money although he promised to do so via an email.
Is there any way to resolve this? Or did I just receive an expensive lesson on trust and being gullible?
I have sold many items on audiogon and I felt up to now that I was fairly good at sniffing out scams and thieves in general.
This gentleman actually had a pair of Soundlab speakers for sale on audiogon recenly and he claimed in his ad to be a legitimate Soundlab dealer.
Follow Ups:
If the money is important to you you can get it resolved.
I`m no lawyer but it seems to me pay pal being a reputable entity is caught in the middle of a scam. They dont want(and some may wonder)to be thought of as illegitimate.
You should be able to petition them for the (or what they have) of this persons information. if they cannot provide it i believe that leaves them liable to fraud.
If you can get valid info you can file a complaint with the (his) local distric attorney and wait and see. wheels sometimes move slow but the faster you get to it the more seriouse you sound(to the DA)
Good luck with it all.
It's odd that the alleged scammer would respond at all saying he won't refund you the money. Did he state a reason for this? What is the current status of your U-1s? What were the agreed upon arrangement for this trade? If this is a scam, there are some resolutions you can take via paypal or your cc (if you paid via CC in paypal). Litigation is possible as well, but it's a lot more resource consuming. There is also http://www.ic3.gov/ , which is administered by the FBI. I haven't found them very useful, but it doesn't hurt to send in your issue for their review. If you know the person's address, you can also contact his local law enforcement department. I've had some success with this method.
I think it's in the public's best interest if you divuldge who this "dealer" is.
Hello, thank you for the advice.
I think perhaps you may have partially misunderstood me, the gentleman responded to my request for the return of my $1,100 with a heart felt apology and promised to immediately return my money, problem is this was on Monday Sept.18 and he promised to send the money by Weds. Sept. 20, I sent him my paypal address in case he did not have it anymore and I have heard nothing else from him.
Fortunately I did not ship my U-1 speakers to him, I still have them crated up and they are again being offered for sale on audiogon.
I do not know the actual dealer name of this gentleman but his audiogon user name is superguru10 and the name that he goes by is Deven Nash.
I am not sure of his exact location but he is supposed to be in the state of Utah, if I can narrow that down a bit I will follow your advice and contact the local law enforcement authorities.
If you paid via credit card simply have the charge reversed. It's pretty simple. Contact your credit card issuer.Good luck,
Thank you for the advice, but no credit card was involved, I had an existing balance at paypal and simply had a cash transfer made
That's too bad. My experience with PayPal has not been positive when attempting to recover funds. Best of luck.
Hello, I should note that mr. Nash did refund my money on 10-04-06
