On a cary 805 set amp or the dehavilland 845? I was curious because I heard the the 3.6 at the audio karma fest this weekend and they were impressive as hell and this is on an audio research reference 110 and the big ref preamp of ARC with the phono stage..I never was that crazy about audio research although I do have a couple products from them but the 3.6s were the most accurate and depth filled speaker presented that day.Everyone kept comming back to the audio dimensions saying they were spoiled..As good as these speakers were I think they had even more to give and reference was on one of the forums to the cary 805s biamped on them.Has anyone tried it..I use my set amps on my logans biamped with no problem but they are 19 watts each.
Follow Ups:
I have a pair of Maggie 1.6Qrs, now bumped back to surround sound status. They will run fine on my Decware Taboo amp (6 watts single ended pentode) but are a little weak in base response. My Decware Radial 3s are a much better match for the Taboo. Before the Radials, I was a confirmed Maggie fan. I normally ran them on a Bel 1001 amp with an Audible Illusion Mod3 preamp. Although this was a fine match, the BEST amp I've ever heard the Maggies on is Acoustic Research. My advice to any Maggie owner is to poney up and get the best Audible Research amp you can afford. This is the only amp I've ever heard the Maggies display truly punchy bass.
That said, I would never go back to SS amplification. The Radials sound too good. I'm hooking them up to a Vaughn Carina SET next week which should provide an even better sound.
I was visiting a friend who asked me to recommend a non-tube based system (heresy!!).Anyway, I went around with him and we listened to the Maggies 1.6 and 3.6 and I was very impressed. Set-up and amplification (Krell) was not ideal and optimized IMO, but even then I was quite impressed. The 1.6 did have a coherence across most of the range that I have not found in many speakers aside from my Cain Abbys. In addition, they were very, very quick, detailed, and projected similar large-scale images, just like the Abbys. Of course top end and bottom end was where they beat my Abbys easily. Especially the tight fast bass was very impressive. Of course, my friend walked out with a pair (too bad he lives more than 2000 miles away). Only downside is that it seems that they do need more power to fully open up. Not sure whether SET would be enough power...

If I wouldn't have a perfectly matched Cain Abby/ Fi system around I would be tempted trying out the Maggies for a while to see how far they could go.

I like the 1.6s the best of all the Maggies.
The "coherence across most of the range"
pretty much sums up what I like about them.
The Maggies with ribbons don't transition well IMO.
Arcam amps drives the 1.6s quite nicely.
Even the small 60W integrated does quite well.
In fact I have been told that the Magnepan owner
uses Arcam monoblocks in his office system.
I would love to hear them driven with an 845 amp.
Match made in heaven I would suspect.
Agree, I would be curious to listen to the 1.6 with a tube amp as well. As mentioned above, I believe they have more potential than most (solid state) systems will realize.Aside from a 845 SET, I would be curious about driving the Maggies with one of Peter McAlister's tube amps.

For the last 7 yrs I have been listening to my 3.6's driven by McIntosh MC1000's. Never found anything better. Then recently, on a whim, I took the Art Audio Carissa Signature (16 wpc 845 SET) out of my other system thinking maybe it could drive the Maggies. It did and big time. To date it is the most beautiful sound I have heard. I'm not talking 100db but I rarely listen to that level anyway. I have heard some 100 wpc amps sound strained on them even at low levels so I can see how the rumor of the need for really big amps would start, but it's not absolutely necessary unless you like to push it to "11" but then I'm not sure the Maggies would be the best choice in that situation. I have tried more powerful push pulls but haven't found the magic of the SET.I know the DeHavilland 845 has a few more watts than the Carissa but maybe the less watts/more current is what is working for me. Give it a try if you can, just make sure the amp has a strong power supply and great transformers.

Its funny because I have martin logan monolith 2s and I use either the upgraded citation 2 or my mac mc60s which are also upgraded and this is with paper in oil caps and polypro filter caps and vintage genelex kt88s or tungsol 6550 black plates..I biamp from 120cps on up with the mcshane modded cit 2 or the mc60s driving the panels and 120 on down I use a threshold SS on the bass and then for low sub bass I have a martin logan Descent sub..I do occasionally use my cary/aes 811 amps on the panels and they are 18 watts with the sv572s and they are nice also but I do like the macs for detail as well as the cit 2.
Im now in the process of building my altec 1570b amps with the tutay circuit.
Have you tried biamping your maggies? Its easy to do and I bet your 845 would even be more dynamic.
I have not tried biamping the Maggies, haven't felt the need. I may try out an active x/o this summer so will have to biamp then. I have heard the Monoliths, which I really like, and from what I heard from that 12" woofer, I would definitely biamp with solid state for the bottom. I think your choice of the Threshold was perfect. How have your panels been over the years? When I was looking at CLS's, it seemed everyone had to replace their panels.
I just bought new panels for them for 750 for the pair..They usually run 900 but I got them thru my friends audio store and hes a logan dealer and since I do a lot of favors for them they got them at cost for me..THey dont have the 40% markup of the typical but even at 900 for the pair would have been a steal and these are improved over the originals..When you think about it,the panels are 70% of the 7k dollar system and then you add the crossover and frame and woofer..Im using a different bass system then the 12inch it came with.
